Chapter Text

Chapter One

Maura POV

The boston town hall was abuzz with activity as it opened its doors for tonight’s award ceremony in order to honour the heroes of the city.

It had been three months since there was a shoot out at Boston Police Department and it was felt that the city was only just recovering from the trauma it had suffered as a result therefore it was nice for the people of Boston to experience something positive.

On the steps, making her way up to the doors doors, was Dr. Maura Isles, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Chief Medical Examiner, in an elegant form fitted green dress with glowing golden brown hair. She was the picture of sophistication and grace; not a single hair out of place. Perfection.

Each step she took further up the steps was precise and displayed confidence; a feeling that at that moment of time was not something that Maura was experiencing. It has been a difficult three months and tonight was causing the emotional as well as psychological scars from the shoot out to feel a little more raw than usual.

She could still feel the warm blood of detective Frankie Rizzoli on her hands as she fought to save his life, the sound of gunfire in the background and feeling the overwhelming fear that shortly her life was about to end. Thankfully, she had been able to save the detectives life and as result of the combined efforts of Boston police force they had been able to take back control from the shooters with no future casualties.

As she entered the town hall, she took a deep cleansing breath and shook off the memories of the shoot out as best she could. Her eyes quickly took in the bodies of people in the lobby and she felt a spike of anxiety flow through her as she readied herself for social interaction.

As her eyes continued to scan the lobby, she noticed a group of people she was expecting to see. In one of the far corners of the room was the figures of Korsak, Frost and Rizzoli alongside their respective families.

Maura quickly made her way over to the group and as she got within hearing range of the group  she overhead a conversation that detective Frankie Rizzoli was having with his mother, Angela Rizzoli.

“…. she said she was coming ma. Give her a little time to get here, you know the traffic will be bad. The ceremony hasn’t started yet” said Frankie to his mother, who appeared to be upset about something.

A flicker of curiosity was felt by Maura, wondering who the ‘she’ they were talking about was. Since she had started working at Boston police department, she had not know detective Rizzoli to be in a serious relationship but appeared that this observation might have been inaccurate.

Deciding to make her presence known she addressed the group, “Good evening everyone” she said in a welcoming tone.

Upon hearing this, the group turned to her direction and a number of “Hi Dr. Isles” and “Good evening doc” were sent her way but nobody engaged her to the conversations they were in the middle of before her arrival.

This was not unusual for Maura, she was shy and weird, usually spending a lot of time alone instead of with friends. In the time she had spent in Boston since starting as the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Chief Medical Examiner she had worked closely with her colleagues, but every engagement had solely been work oriented.

On the outskirts of the group she stood, her eyes observing the interactions between everyone but not engaging therefore she was the first to notice a figure making their way through groups of people in the lobby towards herself and the group she was with.

The figure was dressed in marine dress blues and Maura noted that other military personnel, irrespective of their branch, in the lobby immediately stood to attention as the figure came into their view which intrigued her greatly.

As the figure came closer it became clear that the person dressed in blues was a woman that bore a striking family resemblance to the Rizzoli’s and that they were a general of the marine corps.

Not a second later Maura wasn’t the only in her group to notice the woman as two voices shouted out in happiness.

“Jane!”.
