Chapter Text
It’s believed that you can see how a life will pan out if you simply look at one's birth chart.
A set path. Your life is already written by the second breath you take after you’re born. The stars have already decided on it. Your behavior, your love life and the way you make conscious decisions are written in your stars. People use birth charts to see if they’re compatible with a crush, some people use it to determine their lives and some people think it's a load of rubbish thank you very much, but that doesn’t stop them from wondering…sometimes.
You see, Hermione Granger- the proclaimed brightest witch of her age (and definitely not self proclaimed -maybe just a little-) didn’t believe in all that load of rubbish. Ask anyone in her year at Hogwarts and Hermione Granger made it very vocally known that she didn’t think her time was worth being spent in a class where you could look into a crystal ball or read tea leaves; to Hermione Granger it was all the same. Birth charts and crystal balls, it was all nonsense to her.
Hermione Granger was a woman who also believed in science, but that didn’t stop her from also disbelieving in parallel dimensions, dimensions that split off from our own with every decision we make. Every yes, every no- a new branch- a new timeline, different to the one you exist within, no- Hermione Granger also didn’t believe in that. We have our lives, we make conscious decisions and we get to dictate what happens in them. We make conscious decisions and they simply happen. We can choose to look at how they will affect the things we do in life, how others perceive us and the paths they lead us down; but we decide to take the action, not the stars, not where you were conceived, not where you were born and definitely not when you made your grand entrance into this world.
This way of thinking made sense to her. It helped her rationalise what had happened to her and her loved ones. It couldn’t have been Freds destiny to die so young, that just simply doesn’t make sense to her. He was so loved, and to have that all ripped away because the stars said so, or that somewhere out there there was a parallel universe where Fred was alive, how was it fair that their own Fred was taken from them. It did not and will not ever compute in her very smart and logical brain. The only conclusion that the said very smart brain came up with, is that it could have been avoided. It just happened.
Fred Weasley, Dobby, Sirius Black and every single innocent person that was taken, it just happened and though it wasn’t their actions and decisions, it was someone’s. It was their actions and their consequences that affected other people. Augustus Rookwood could have chosen not to be a death eater, which meant he never would have caused the explosion that killed Fred Weasley. The logic that Fred Weasley was always supposed to die, -a fixed event- just hurt too much so Hermione Granger decided as she always does, was to rationalise it.
Sadly for Hermione Granger, there would come a point in her life where she wished she didn’t rationlise, where she wished she could see the outcome of these different universes if it were true and maybe possibly get to pick which one she ended up in. She wanted to see what it looked like to not break Draco Malfoy's heart- a thing she never thought she would have. If you asked her, she would just want to see- take a sneak peak, because for a moment, she would know what it looked like not break the love of her life’s heart, because in that moment she would be able to finally breathe. But if you did ask her whether she would change her actions, if she got to pick a universe to get an alternative happy ending if it even existed, she would tell you wished she did it all differently but if she went back, she knew she would do it all the same. She would make it through the winter even if it kills her, just know that she tried.
