A Day in the Life of Derek Stilinski-Hale

Work Text:

Derek Stilinski-Hale likes to start his day early. He wakes naturally around 5 am while his husband Stiles is snoring gently beside him. After watching Stiles for a few minutes with a soft smile on his face, he slides smoothly out of bed so as to not wake him, and steps softly into their shared walk-in robe.

Pulling on his workout clothes, he exits the robe after slipping on his socks, and quietly leaves the room.

Derek’s next stop is the laundry. The clothes that have been left to soak in the sink are drained and rinsed, then thrown in the washing machine. They should be clean and ready to hang up by the time the wolf gets back from his run.

Moving into the kitchen, he empties the dishwasher of the clean dishes and puts them meticulously away. As the final plate is put away, he hears movement in his daughter’s room. Pausing and looking above him, he listens as Claudie turns over in her sleep and settles back down. Releasing the breath he didn’t know he was holding, he closes the cabinet door silently and leaves the kitchen.

Sitting at the back door in the mudroom is the Stilinski-Hale’s 1 year old Golden Retriever. Odin still looks half asleep, but also eager to join Derek on his run. As Derek puts on his sneakers, Odin’s tail starts to wag, faster and faster as Derek ties his laces. As soon as Derek finishes lacing the final shoe and his foot is placed on the ground, Odin launches himself at his owner, smothering him in kisses.

“Ok Odin! Let’s go!” Derek says pushing his puppy off him as he gets up.

Derek opens the back door and Odin flies out and down the stairs to begin his morning zoomies, while Derek pricks his thumb with a claw and runs it down the side of the door frame activating the runes. Derek insisted on a special set of runes to protect his family when he’s not physically in the house, and Stiles was happy to oblige.

Once Derek feels the runes activate, he runs down the back steps and into the preserve. He can hear Odin running behind him trying to catch up.

Derek’s run takes him and Odin around the border of the Hale lands in the preserve. He checks the runes, and looks for anything that may be out of place so he can look into it later. The route he takes is around an hour and fifteen minutes long, and by the time that he makes back home Odin has slowed down but is happily grinning with his tongue lolling out the side.

With Odin’s water bowl filled up and the pup happily lapping away, Derek breaks the seal on the runes and enters the house. He immediately hears his son talking to himself upstairs. Derek can’t help but smile as he listens to Eli chatter to his stuffed toys about going to daycare and seeing his friends, reading his favourite books, and how he loves Miss Kira!

Derek washes his hands at the kitchen sink and makes his way upstairs to take a shower. He pops his head into Claudie’s room to see her completely sacked out on her back with one hand squeezing the life out of her fluffy wolf, and the other being used as a pacifier with her thumb firmly in her mouth. He closes the door quietly and moves onto Eli’s room.

Just as he suspected, Eli had lined up his three favourite stuffed toys and was telling him about his plans for the day. He was about to finish discussing morning tea time when he lifted his nose and sniffs loudly, eyes widening once he realises Derek is at the door.

“Daddy!!” Eli gets up and throws himself at his father. Derek picks him up and holds him close, breathing in deeply behind his son’s ear.

“Hello my Eli. Did you sleep well?”

“Yes daddy! I didn’t even snore!”

Derek’s eyebrows furrow. “But how would you know if you were snoring pup? You were asleep!”

“I don’t snore like papa does.”

“No you don’t. That’s a special kind of snoring. Speaking of papa, why don’t I give you to papa to snuggle while I have a shower? Then we can go make breakfast together. How does that sound?”

Eli throws his hands up in excitement. “Yeah!! Snuggles with papa!”

Derek carries Eli into the master bedroom, and plops him onto the bed. The pup crawls along the covers and sticks his nose into his papa’s face. Stiles stirs under the covers and removes one arm to drag his giggling son under the covers with him. He maneuvers the pup so he’s spooning him.

“More sleep pup. A little more.”

“Ok papa.” Eli closes his eyes with a big sigh.

Derek smiles at his son and husband, and watches them for a few minutes before walking into the bathroom to have a shower.

Ten minutes later, Derek exits the bathroom in a cloud of steam to see his husband and son have been joined by Odin who was sleeping on his back with his paws in the air. As he’s getting dressed in his day to day clothes, he can hear Claudie in her room talking to herself.

“Dada. Papa. Gapa. Odie. Ewhy. Dada. Papa. Gapa. Odie. Ewhy. Wuv you. WUV YOU.”

Derek leaves his room with a chuckle and walks to Claudie’s room. He opens the door slowly, then jumps in the room. “Good morning pup!”

“Dada! Dada! UP UP!”

Derek picks Claudie up with a growl and nuzzles into her cheek. “Nom nom nom on Claudie!” Claudie laughs and laughs, slapping her father’s cheeks.

He brings her over to the changing table grabbing a change of clothes along the way. Placing her gently on the table he removes her pyjamas and throws them in the laundry hamper, and gets to changing her diaper, all while singing nonsense songs and Claudie laughing along.

Once Claudie’s diaper is changed, and she’s dressed for the day Derek carries her out of the room and down the stairs into the kitchen. After placing her in her high chair he warms up some milk for her while talking about their plans for the day.

“So bug, first we are going to have breakfast.”

“Bfst.”

“That’s right, breakfast. Then we are going to help get Eli ready for daycare, and papa ready for work.”

“I work?”

“No bubba, you don’t work yet. You’re only a pup!”

“I pup!”

“And after we drop Eli off at daycare, I thought maybe we could ….”

“Park dada! Park! Wiv Odie!”

Derek walks over with the bottle filled with warm milk and hands it to his daughter. “Yes, I thought we could go to the park. It’s going to be a lovely day outside today. We should make the best of it.”

“Fank you dada.”

“You’re welcome bug. Now, what should we make for breakfast today? I was thinking, some eggs, fruit, and some toast? What do you think?”

“Yes! Donuts!”

“Baby girl I didn’t mention donuts. You finish your milk, and then we’ll get some yummy food for you. Ok?”

“Ok.”

Derek pulls out the necessary ingredients and begins the process of making breakfast. He cuts up the strawberries and adds them to a bowl with some blueberries. He puts bread in the toasters, and cracks eggs in the bowl. As he turns on the stove to begin the scrambled eggs, he can hear Stiles upstairs with Eli getting out of bed, Stiles helping their son go to the bathroom, and them both washing their hands, then climbing down the stairs.

Knowing Eli can hear him, Derek says, “Eli can you please help papa set the table for breakfast?”

Eli agrees, and walks into the kitchen, Stiles being dragged behind his son. “Come on papa, we hasta set the table! Dada said.”

“Ok Eli pup, we’ll set the table. Can you please get the cutlery, and I’ll bring down the plates and glasses. Did you want milk or orange juice to drink?”

“Coffee please papa.”

Derek laughs while Stiles gasps. “Coffee!! You want coffee!!! I don’t think so Mister! You are hyper enough without caffeine my friend. Oh no, your options are milk or orange juice!”

“But papa! You’re hypo and you has coffee ALL DA TIME!! Grandpa even says so and he would know because he knows everything because he’s the whole police!”

“He’s just the Sheriff pup, not the whole police, but I have no doubt he said that. You still haven’t answered my question though.”

While Eli gets the cutlery out of the top drawer and sets the table, he umms and ahhs until he decides on orange juice. Stiles hands Eli the plates to put down while he gets Eli his orange juice, and coffee for himself and Derek. “Claudie girl, did you want a little more milk?”

Claudie looks at her empty bottle. “Mo milk peash papa.”

“Good manners Claudie”, Derek says as he places the bowl of fruit and the eggs on the dining table. “Thank you for helping papa with the table Eli.”

“Welcome daddy.”

Derek gets to the table with the toast as Stiles arrives with the hot coffee for the adults. With a practiced ease, Derek and Stiles distribute the food on everyone’s plates.

Before they dig in, Stiles asks, “Kiddos, what do we say?”

Eli and Claudie chime in, “Thanks daddy!” “Fank you dada!”

Derek smiles at his children. “You’re welcome pups.”

The house goes quiet as the Stilinski-Hales eat their breakfast. Claudie loves the fruit and smiles while she chews the berries. Eli is trying to make an egg sandwich, piling the scrambled egg onto a slice of toast, folding it over, and taking a bite. Derek watches his children again with a smile.

Stiles disrupts the silence. “What did you want to do for dinner tonight my love? I was thinking I could pick up some Chinese food for dinner. We haven’t had that in a while and I know it’s your favourite.”

Derek finishes his mouthful of toast. “That sounds good. You know I do love egg rolls.”

“I will get an extra serving just for you my love.”

“Why don’t you ask your dad if he wants to come for dinner? We haven’t seen him in a while, and I’m sure the kids would love to see him too.”

Stiles smiles widely at his husband. “Yeah? I’d love that. Thank you boo.”

Derek blushes into his mug of coffee at the term of endearment, and takes a sip. Stiles has finished his breakfast and turns to help Eli get the last of his breakfast eaten.

“Not much more to go son, then we’ll go get you ready for daycare while daddy gets Miss Claudie sorted.”

Eli shoves a strawberry in his mouth. “Okay papa. Can I wear my Batman shirt today?”

“You can wear your Batman shirt today. Have you finished pup? You still have a little more to go.”

“I full papa. Need room for orange juice.” He grabs his sippy cup and guzzles the cold beverage.

“Woah woah there wolfie, you don’t want to choke on your OJ. Why don’t you put that down and clean off your plate and put it in the sink, then you can come back to your OJ.”

“But papa …”

“I know Eli, it’s delicious, but you just need to chill for a sec.”

Eli gets down from the table with a frown just like his daddy’s, and takes his plate to the trash. He scraps the last little bits off the plate and puts it in the sink with his cutlery just like his papa asked him too.

“Good work Eli. Thank you for listening to your papa”, Derek says as he finishes his coffee. He puts down his mug and picks up Claudie’s spoon and helps feed her the last of her breakfast. Eli comes back to the table, and Stiles hands him the last of his orange juice.

Eli sits and drinks his juice while Claudie finishes eating, and Stiles clears the plates. He rinses everything off and puts them in the dishwasher. He takes the now empty coffee mugs, and Eli’s sippy cup and does the same, rinsing, then putting in the dishwasher.

“Good job Eli on not getting your breakfast on you! Let’s go get you ready for daycare and I’ll get ready work, ok?” Stiles puts his hand out for Eli to take, and they walk out of the room together, chatting all the way up to Eli’s room.

Claudie pushes her sippy cup away. “No mo daddy.”

“Are you full baby girl?”

“I full. Park now?”

Derek chuckles. “Park soon Claudie. I just need to finish up clearing from breakfast, pack Eli’s bag, drop him off at daycare, then we can go. Wanna play in the playroom for a bit?”

“Yes peash!”

Derek picks up Claudie and carries her into the playroom where he places her in front of the blocks. “I’ll be right back baby, you build a skyscraper for daddy okay?”

“Ok!”

Going back into the kitchen, Derek rinses off Claudie’s plate and cup and puts them in the dishwasher. He then sets about packing Eli’s food for the day. Pulling out a Bluey themed bento box, he opens it up and starts to fill it with Eli’s favourite things. Crackers, cheese, salami, all go into one compartment. Another compartment has slices of cucumber and carrot. The third compartment Derek puts two of Eli’s favourite chocolate chip cookies, and the last compartment has the hummus to dip the veggies in. He closes that up and puts it to the side. He puts an apple and a banana on top of the bento box ready for Eli to put them in his backpack, along with a water bottle taken from the fridge.

Grabbing the all-purpose spray from under the sink along with a rag, he sprays and wipes down the dining table and the kitchen benches. Once everything has been wiped down, Derek pulls out a bag and fills it with snacks, juice boxes and water for his trip to the park with Claudie.

Derek goes back to the mudroom and grabs the bag for Odin containing treats, poop bags, and a bottle that he fills with water. Grabbing the snack bag on the way through, he puts both bags at the front door.

Stiles and Eli come down the stairs together as Derek places the bags down. “Ok pup, your lunch and snacks are ready to be put in your backpack, are there any notes or anything in your bag you need to give us?”

Eli gets his backpack out of the coat closet and peers into his bag. “Nope. All empty!” He turns his bag upside down and shakes it, raining crumbs onto the floor.

“Ok great. Got put your lunch in your bag, don’t forget to zip it up!”

Eli skips off to the kitchen. Derek looks at Stiles who is mid grimace. “Hey, what’s up?” He leans forward to take a discreet sniff in Stiles direction.

Stiles takes a half-hearted swipe at Derek. “Put the sniffer away. I’m ok, just feeling a little funny. No big deal.”

Derek frowns. “Did you want to take the day off today? I’m sure we can get someone else to run the bookstore.”

“Nah babe it’s good. I’m fine. Just a bit queasy. I’ll take it easy, but it's my day to do the wages so I want to get that sorted.”

“Ok. Did you want me to bring you some lunch? It’s Wednesday so the diner has chicken soup on special. With those special warm rolls you like?”

Stiles wraps his arms around Derek and sighs. “You always know what makes me feel better. That sounds wonderful.”

Derek kisses Stiles gently, followed by a peck on the cheek. “Anything for you my love. Now I need to get Claudie and Odin, and get this show on the road.”

“How about I grab Claudie, and meet you at the Mom Mobile?”

Derek rolls his eyes. “Deal. Meet at the Mom Mobile.” He calls out for Odin just as Eli is walking to the front door with his backpack. He opens the front door and holds it for Eli and Odin to walk through, and waits for Stiles to come through with Claudie.

As Derek closes the door, Stiles puts a hand out touching the side of the house and whispers a spell to keep the house safe from those who would do harm. Jogging down the stairs he puts Claudie in her car seat and buckles her in. He then opens the back of the car and helps Odin get settled.

Derek helps Eli with his seat, and makes sure he’s also buckled in and closes the door. He places the bags onto the front passenger seat while Stiles waits. He turns to Stiles. “Are you sure you’re ok babe? You’re looking a little pale?”

Stiles clears his throat. “I’m not sure, still a bit …” Before he can finish the sentence he runs towards a thicket of bushes near the edge of the clearing and vomits. Derek runs after Stiles while Eli screams in the car.

“Stiles! What’s going on? Maybe you should stay home. Issac can look after the store today.”

Stiles stands up. “I'm ok. It's ok. I feel a better now I’ve puked.”

Derek’s brows furrow. “I really think you should stay home and rest.”

Stiles shakes his head and starts walking towards the jeep. “I just need to pop in, I have to do payroll. Then I’ll come home.”

“Come say goodbye to the kids, and then you can get on your way. But you just do what you need to then you come home. Don’t make me call Melissa.”

Stiles stops walking. “You wouldn’t dare.”

Derek raises a thick brow. “Wouldn’t I?”

Stiles sighs. “Ok Der. It shouldn’t take long at all. I’ll let you know when I’m on my way home.” He opens the back door. “I’m ok kids, sorry for freaking you out.”

Eli has tears streaming down his face. “What’s wrong? What’s wrong papa? Why are you sick? Do you need the bite? Daddy! Give papa the bite!”

Stiles can’t help but laugh. “I don’t need the bite pup. I’ll be ok I promise.”

“You promise promise?”

“I promise promise. Sometimes humans just get sick for stupid reasons. It’s nothing to worry about.”

Eli gives his papa the Stilinski look. “You better not be fibbin, or Imma tell Grampa. He’ll grounded you!”

“Psh. He can’t ground me, I’m an adult now!”

Derek takes one of the water bottles from the snack bag and hands it to Stiles. “Here. Wash out your mouth and take a few sips. I need to get Eli off to daycare. Don’t forget to text me. I promised to take Claudie to the park for a bit so I’m going to do that. I might take her to the library after so you can get some rest. We’ll talk about dinner later after we’re home ok?”

“Ok. I still want to see dad. Maybe if we order he can pick it up on his way through?”

Derek kisses Stiles on the forehead. “I’m sure he would. Now go. The sooner you get to work, the sooner you can come home.”

Stiles kisses the kids, kisses Derek and walks off to the Jeep. As he’s climbing in the driver’s seat he hears Eli ask Derek, “Is papa really ok daddy?” “He will be ok pup.”

Derek watches Stiles drive off and gets in the Toyota. First stop daycare.

*****

Derek pulls up to the curb outside of daycare. Kira is waiting at the curb and guiding children in through the front door.

Eli is wiggling in his car seat. “Miss Kira! I’m here Miss Kira!!”

Derek chuckles as he gets Eli out of his seat. He lifts him out of the car and as soon as his feet hit the ground Eli starts running towards Kira.

“Elias Samuel Stilinski-Hale come and get your backpack please! You can hug Miss Kira in a minute.”

Eli turns mid run, flailing like his papa as he runs towards Derek. “Let’s hurry daddy! I want to see my friends!”

Rolling his eyes, he takes the backpack from the front seat and puts it on Eli’s fidgeting form. “Have a good day Eli! Behave for Miss Kira please!”

“I always behave daddy! Bye daddy! Bye Claudie!” Eli runs to the front entrance of the daycare giving a high five to Kira on the way through.

Derek walks over to Kira and gives her a kiss on the cheek. “How are you Kira?”

“I’m doing well Derek. The pack bbq still on for Sunday? I’m planning on making a big batch of yakitori.”

“Yes it’s still on. Although Stiles is a bit sick today, hopefully whatever is ailing him is better by then. Everyone loves your yakitori. It’s not going to last long!”

Kira giggles. “Maybe I should make a massive batch then. That’s a shame about Stiles. You don’t know what’s wrong?”

Derek shakes his head. “Not really, just that he was feeling queasy, then vomited just before we left.”

Kira gasps. “Oh no! That’s awful. He’s staying home today?”

“No. He needs to do payroll. Then he’ll come home. I’m sure everything is fine. He was only sick the once, and he said he felt better after. Maybe something he ate didn’t agree with him.”

“Maybe.” A couple more children from Kira’s class run up to her. “Let me know if you need to cancel or postpone Sunday, or if Stiles needs any help.”

“I will. Thanks Kira.”

Derek walks back to the Mom Mobile and sits in the drivers seat thinking about Stiles. Something tickles his memories like it’s trying to push through but he doesn’t know what it is. Sighing he turns to Claudie. “You ready to go bug?”

“Yes daddy! Park time!”

“Park time!”

*****

Derek pulls up to the park to see that a few of the regulars are already there. Odin’s best friend Rufus, an 8 month old Beagle pup is running after one of his humans, and Claudie’s best friend Eliza is trying to climb onto a swing.

Derek unbuckles Claudie from her seat, and puts her on his hip. He gets out the snack bag and Odin’s bag, and closes the door. Odin finally gets released from the back of the car and goes running towards Rufus. Derek shakes his head.

They make their way over to where Eliza’s parents Daniel and Kristy are sitting with their newborn son Bastian. “Morning you guys. How are you going?”

“Tired”, they reply in unison, followed by a chuckle.

“He’s actually sleeping much better than Eliza did at his age. There’s just so much more involved with a newborn.”

Derek looks at Bastian sleeping peacefully in his stroller. “It’s true. I loved that time though. Waking in the night and just holding them as they fall back to sleep.”

“Or as they scream the house down”, Daniel says with a chuckle.

Derek laughs. “Or that. I just mean it’s different at that time of night. No other sounds, just you and the baby. They may be screaming but they are relying on you to work out what they need and when you finally get it, even if it’s hours later, you have a sleepy baby, you’re learning about them and their different cries, and you just look at this little creature who you helped create and it’s just amazing.”

“Uh oh. Someone’s getting clucky.”

Derek blushes. “Maybe a little.”

Kristy takes sleeping Bastian out of his pram and hands him to Derek. “Here you go. Get your baby fix.”

Derek holds Bastian close as he moves gently in his swaddle. Derek rumbles quietly, and Bastian settles with a sigh.

An hour passes with him holding Bastian, a happy Odin comes and flops at his feet while Claudie and Eliza run around chasing a butterfly. A familiar scent hits Derek’s nose and he turns to see the Sheriff walking towards them with a smile.

Claudie tips her head back and sniffs. “Gapa!! Gapa!! Hi!” She starts running full tilt towards her grandfather.

John picks her up and swings her around. “Hello my Claudia Tali! How is my girl today?”

“Park Gapa! Liza and me play!”

“You’re playing with Eliza? That’s awesome bug!” John puts Claudie down and she runs back towards Eliza who is now distracted by a ladybug.

He stops in front of Derek. “Son, have you stolen Daniel and Kristy’s baby?”

“Maybe.”

John laughs. “He’s so tiny! Congratulations Kristy, how are you feeling?”

“I’m doing well, thanks Sheriff. Bastian is a good sleeper. Still takes it out of you though.”

The Sheriff nods. “Stiles was a good sleeper too. Claudia was still exhausted. He was a handful though.”

Derek agrees with his father in law. “And still is.”

The adults laugh. Bastian starts to wriggle so Kristy takes him off Derek’s hands and begins to breastfeed.

Derek looks at John. “We’re thinking of having Chinese for dinner and we wanted to invite you over if you are free.”

“I’d love that. I finish at 5 today. Did you want me to pick it up on my way to yours?”

“Yes please. Stiles had originally said he was going to do it, but he’s finishing up early today because he’s not well.”

“What’s wrong?”

“Not sure, but he was sick this morning. He says he’s ok though. I’m hopeful he can sleep it off when he gets home.”

“Ok. Well text me when you’ve placed the order and I’ll grab it. Let me know if you need me to pick anything up for Stiles as well.”

“Will do. Thanks John.”

“Of course. See you tonight. Bye Claudie!!”

Claudie runs up to John to give him a hug goodbye and a kiss on the cheek. “Wuv you Gapa.”

“I love you too Claudie.”

John walks back to his cruiser with a wave. Just as the car pulls away from the curb he gets a text.

Hi babe. Leaving now, am going to the Doc before I come home. I feel weird. Love you.

Derek frowns. Define weird.

Just weird. My skin feels funny and I just feel weird.

Derek frowns more. That memory is tickling his brain again and he still can’t place it.

Ok my love. We’ll see you when we get home. Your dad saw us at the park and stopped by, everything is sorted for tonight. Love you.

Stiles' next message comes in 10 minutes later. Love you too Sourwolf.

*****

After spending a couple of hours at the park, Derek, Claudie and Odin are exhausted. Claudie got her second wind a half hour before they left and ran around with Odin like a mad woman. She’s laughing as Derek straps her into the car, while Odin pants loudly in the back.

“Ok Miss Claudie, I thought we might go to the library, but I think we need naps. Do we want to take a nap?”

“No naps! No!”

The final no pierces Derek’s ear like a whistle.

“Claudia Tali, no yelling. That was unnecessary. We will see how we feel when we get home. You may still feel like taking a nap. But I won’t make you do anything ok?”

“Ok but no naps!”

Derek fights to not roll his eyes at his daughter. After buckling her in he closes the door and gets in the drivers side. He looks in the rear view mirror to see Claudie’s eyes slowly closing. Derek can’t help the snort that escapes as he watches his daughter fall asleep.

*****

By the time they get home Claudie is sound asleep. Derek pulls up next to Stiles' jeep, and turns off the engine to try to hear Stiles' heartbeat. His already fast-beating heart is now going a million miles an hour.

Derek gets out of the car as quickly as he can without waking up Claudie. He lets Odin out of car and then grabs his sleeping daughter, leaving the bags in the vehicle.

He carefully enters the house, climbs the stairs, and places Claudie in her crib. She stirs briefly then sinks further into sleep. Derek closes the door as quietly as he can and runs to his husband.

Stiles is sitting on the edge of the bed holding a piece of paper. Derek slides to his knees in front of Stiles and grabs his hands.

“What’s wrong? Stiles? Are you ok?”

Stiles raises his head, his eyes shine with tears. As he hands over the paper to Derek he says, “I’m pregnant.”

Derek’s heart skips a beat. “You’re pregnant? Really?”

“Really. Look at the sonogram.”

Derek looks down at the paper in his hands. He unfolds it to see two pictures. Baby A and Baby B. He gasps.

“Baby B? It’s twins?”

Stiles smiles brightly. “It’s twins.”

Derek crumples into Stiles, wrapping his arms around his mate and cries happy tears. Stiles returns the hug and cries his own tears of joy. “I always promised you a brood of children Derek.”

Derek chuckles against the fabric of Stiles’ shirt. “You did my love. That you did.”

Derek looks up at Stiles. “We going to tell your dad tonight?”

“Absolutely. The proudest Grandpa to ever Grandpa needs to know about his new grandkids. We’ll have to tell our kids first though.”

“We have the pack bbq on Sunday. Did you want to postpone?”

“God no. All those Aunties and Uncles need to know!”

Derek chuckles. “That’s true. Erica would eviscerate both of us if she was the last to find out.”

“Not to mention Lydia.”

“Oh lord! We don’t need to ire of the banshee.”

Derek moves to sit next to Stiles on the bed, and pulls him in for a cuddle. “I’m so happy Stiles. You are such a good papa to my pups, and such a good husband. I’m so lucky to have you.”

Stiles shakes his head. “That’s where you’re wrong. I’m the lucky one. To have a husband who adores me, and adores our children, who loves my dad. Who has the respect of the community and his pack? I’m so proud to be your husband.”

Derek and Stiles share a soft kiss. “Let’s have a nap. Claudie will be out for a few more hours. By the time she wakes I can go grab Eli. Then we can tell them the good news.”

The maneuver themselves onto the bed and nap wrapped around each other.

*****

Derek and Stiles sit Claudie and Eli on the couch with a juice box each. They sit on the coffee table. Stiles grabs Derek’s hand.

“Daddy and I have some exciting news to tell you pups. You know how I was sick this morning? Well I went to the doctor, and I’m pregnant! With two babies!”

Eli’s bottom lip wobbles. “I’m going to be a big brother again? To two whole babies this time?”

Derek smiles at his first born. “You are Eli.”

Eli promptly bursts into tears and throws himself at Stiles, wailing about how excited he is and how he’s going to teach them all the things. Claudie is looking at Eli with a tilt to the head and a confused expression.

“Ewhy sad?”

Derek brings Claudie to sit on his lap. “Those are happy tears. You are going to be a big sister Claudie!”

“Me sister?”

“Yes! Big sister! You’ll have to help me look after papa ok?”

“Ok dada.”

“Good girl.”

Derek kisses her forehead and watches his little family with a smile on his face.

*****

John lets himself into the rowdy Stilinski-Hale house holding the bag of Chinese food. All he can hear is squealing and laughter coming from the lounge room. He places the bag of food on the entry table and walks to where his family is.

Derek and Stiles are tickling and noming on their children causing them to squeal with laughter.

“No papa! Don’t nom on me, I’m not food!”

“Oh but you are Eli! You are my little muffin! OM NOM NOM!”

E li squeals again, throwing his head back in laughter. He catches sight of his grandpa standing in the door. “GRANDPA!!!” Eli wiggles his way out of Stiles’ hold and runs to his grandfather. John picks him up and gives him a big hug.

“What’s going on here Eli? Do I need to arrest anyone?”

“No! Don’t arrest anyone! We’ve all been good!”

“Are you sure? I just witnessed your papa chomping on you like a muffin!”

“It’s not real grandpa, I promise!”

“Ok then, no one gets arrested.” He puts his grandson down and looks at his son.

“Why is your face like that Stiles? Derek said you were unwell? What’s going on?”

Stiles’ face lights up. “I’m pregnant dad. With twins.”

John looks over at Derek who is nodding his head, smile a mile wide, tears in his eyes. “Really?”

Stiles gets up and shows his dad the sonogram. “Really.”

John looks at the sonogram, hands shaking. “Oh son, I’m so proud of you.”

Father and son embrace, Eli dancing around his father and grandfather.

Later that night, when John has gone home, after reading his grandkids their favourite bedtime stories, after the house has been tidied and the left over food put away, Derek and Stiles lay in bed wrapped around each other.

Derek watches as Stiles slowly falls asleep. He leans forward and kisses Stiles nose and whispers, “I love you.”

Stiles mumbles back, “Love you too Sourwolf.”

Derek slips into slumber with a smile on his face.
