Work Text:

White, silk hair and sparkling purple eyes caught his gaze. The look those eyes sent him couldn’t be described as anything but love. Love and care, as if the one those eyes belonged to had hopelessly fallen in love with him. “Vanitas,” the human whispered, lips barely moving as the word rolled off their tongue. Vanitas felt himself drawn to them, fingers itching to touch their caramel-coloured skin. But the second his own, pale fingers touched the human’s cheek, the stranger disappeared into thin air.

Eyes snapping open wide within seconds, Vanitas scrambled to sit up in his bed hastily. He couldn’t believe it. This was the third night in a row he’d dreamed about Noé. The guy was already annoying as it was, always lurking around him during the day. Why did he also have to steal his precious sleep now? Their agreement had been clear, but apparently not clear enough for the taller one, since he’d broken one of the most important rules. That was also the reason why Vanitas had decided to end it, together with their barely-existing friendship. Well, sometimes he’d find himself looking for him, wanting to tell him about whatever thing he’d just learned in his advanced biology course, or meaning to ask for a movie night, maybe they would climb to the roof together afterwards to look at the stars. – But that was not the point!

The point was, Noé had broken the rules so Vanitas had ended the agreement. Easy as that. Just that it hadn’t been easy ever since he’d done that two weeks ago. Noé seemed to be following his every step and Vanitas couldn’t stop thinking about him, everything reminded him of the purple-eyed individual and he couldn’t help but think of him whenever he spotted something that might entice the pretty sparkles and child-like curiosity in his eyes. It was such an adorable sight, Vanitas just wanted to kiss him every time Noé looked like that. Basically, Noé’s existence loomed over the black-haired man day and night like a dark shadow and he didn’t know what to do about it. Because he hated the guy, he really did. He wanted nothing more than to stay away from him.

And that’s exactly what he told himself when he saw Noé the next day in their college’s cafeteria. He was standing by his friends, talking to the black-haired girl Vanitas knew was called Dominique. Noé shared his dorm with her and they were childhood friends. Also, she hated Vanitas for no apparent reason. She was playing with one of her long, wavy strands, golden eyes set on the man as if not carefully listening to his every word would kill her. For some reason, the picture made Vanitas want to burn; to go up in flames, feeling the heat slowly and painfully eat him away.

Opting to look away instead, Vanitas bought himself some food and sat down at a random empty table with his back to Noé and Dominique. He didn’t need that kind of negativity right now, he had an exam in his next class and he would not mess that up.

Exactly three weeks after the last time Vanitas had spoken to Noé – when Noé had confessed his love to him, even if it seemed to have been an accident rather than on purpose – Vanitas had enough of spotting Dominique shamelessly flirting with the white-haired man multiple times a day. Sometimes he would see her leaning in too closely for it to seem platonic, or she would bat her eyelashes at him, giving her childhood friend a smile that was probably intended to be cute. Despite knowing Noé didn’t want anything from her, and despite this not being a new behaviour but instead something she had always been doing, at least from when Vanitas had gotten to know her, it made his blood boil. Four weeks ago, Vanitas had still had the reassurance that he got to have Noé, to be the one to make him feel good, but now Vanitas had nothing. He could only watch.

Vanitas had enough of watching.

He snapped when Dominique gave Noé a light peck on the cheek, nothing too unusual. It still made the water overflow, the sea of his usual somewhat calm being now stormy and it felt as if a tsunami was building up. Without being able to form another thought, Vanitas stormed forward, just in time for the bell to ring and the students slowly clearing the halls to get to their classes in time. But Noé didn’t manage to get far, only a few lockers further from his own, the one Dominique had kissed his cheek at. The bright blue-eyed human moved to catch Noé by the wrist, immediately using the moment of surprise to turn him around and press him against the lockers. Cursing their height difference, Vanitas forced himself to stand on tip toes so that he could look into those beautiful purple eyes.

Letting out a startled yelp as his back hit the locker behind him with a loud thump, Noé’s eyes widened at the sight of his– ex-friend? “Vani–,” he tried, but the shorter one didn’t even let him finish speaking his name aloud.

“I fucking hate you,” Vanitas declared, then grabbed Noé by the back of his neck and pulled him in, their lips clashing together to a rough kiss. For a second, the situation still seemed to catch up with the taller, not responding to the kiss. But then his lips moved back against Vanitas’, letting the storm inside the blue-eyed man take over him, hands placed on his waist, before wandering down to his hips and then even lower to his thighs.

“Jump,” Noé demanded, to which Vanitas gladly obeyed, knowing what was to come. Just as he jumped, the taller one caught him by his thighs, pulling him close as Vanitas locked his legs behind his back. In a swift motion, Noé turned them around, so it was Vanitas with his back against the locker instead. The blue-eyed medicine student let out a quiet gasp as the cold metal collided with his back, his left hand clutching the back of Noés shirt and the right one slightly scratching the back of Noés neck as his fingers curled in at the sudden sensation.

The white-haired man used the chance to slide his tongue into Vanitas’ mouth, deepening the kiss. A strong whiff of Noé’s cologne intoxicated Vanitas, making him want nothing but give his everything to him. “Je te déteste,” the man breathed out, feeling the way Noé’s sweet mouth latched onto his neck, lips gently caressing the sensitive skin, before he sunk his teeth down, knowing full well it would leave a bite mark. “Fuck!”

“You’re bleeding.” The words were merely a whisper, lips moving against the crook of his neck. In the next second, a tongue ran over the bite mark, making Vanitas hold back a sound that might be loud enough to disturb the nearest class. That would be embarrassing.

“We should skip,” he suggested, breathless.

“We already are,” Noé replied, seemingly not having enough from creating marks on Vanitas’ neck yet.

Gently placing his hands on the taller one’s shoulders to bring some distance in between them, Vanitas clarified, “I meant not here. Preferably in my dorm.” To that, Noé didn’t have anything against. He slowly set the blue-eyed man down, then grabbed his wrist and together they sprinted towards the student dorms. When they arrived at Vanitas’ dorm and he struggled to unlock the door, Noé’s impatience was painfully obvious. Vanitas almost didn’t even get to close his door before Noé whisked him away to the bedroom.

That noon, they spent their time dancing around each other between the sheets, giving each other all their love; enjoying the thrill of finally getting to have the other again after weeks of staying apart. Only in the late afternoon, they were satisfied enough, slowly coming down from their latest high.

“You make me feel sick,” Vanitas announced, turning to look at Noé, who had closed his eyes peacefully, seemingly drifting in and out of sleep. But when he opened them again, he looked surprisingly alert, not at all as if he was about to fall asleep.

Brows furrowed, Noé asked, “What’s that supposed to mean?”

Lips forming a small smile, Vanitas mumbled, “I love you, too. I was just too blind to see it.”

To say the purple-eyed man was surprised was an understatement. “You mean that?”

“No, I did all this just to mess with you,” Vanitas deadpanned, his all-too familiar smirk finding a way back to his face. “ Yes , I mean it. I mean it a crazy lot.” It’s scary how much I do , he added in thought. But he didn’t speak it aloud, feeling as if he’d been too vulnerable already.

Noé looked at him and oh . There it was. The adorable sparkle in the deep purple eyes, reminding Vanitas of amethysts. Without thinking, he pressed a short kiss on the smile that had spread across the taller one's face. When he tried to pull away, Noé chased his lips, not wanting to stop just yet. “I love you, Vanitas.”

Vanitas thought he could get used to the sound of that.
