“Shit…” David couldn’t help the curse from leaving his lips. He tried to stand up as graciously as he could while ignoring the fact he could feel his face burning up with embarrassment. He totally overestimated himself and thought he could keep his balance in the crowded train. But considering the fact it was still only 8 AM and he had a shit night of sleep, it wasn’t quite the surprise he failed miserably.
“Hey, are you okay? Need a hand?” David looked up to see a young man, probably in his twenties just like him, extending a hand. He gratefully took it and hauled himself upright. The other boy was quite a head smaller, but surprisingly strong.
He showed the man a thankful smile. “Thanks, I kinda forgot I’m terrible at keeping balance.” David explained sheepishly. He assumed that would be the end of their short interaction, but short mystery boy seemed to have different plans. The boy took off his headphones completely and turned his full attention to David. David would lie if the action didn’t cause some fluttering in his stomach.
“Nah, you’re okay. Train’s are crazily busy these days, aren’t they? I’m Jack by the way. ” The boy, Jack, extended his hand again. David took it without a doubt. “I’m David.” Jack flashed him an adorable grin. “Hi Davey, nice to meet ya.” David could feel a blush spreading on his cheeks again. “Uh… Um, nice to meet you too.” He cursed himself for the stuttering that always seemed to happen when he met new people.
Normally someone would laugh about it or point out David’s very prominent red face, but apparently Jack was different. He only smiled softly and changed the subject. “Well Davey, what are you off to then?”
David shrugged. “Well, I was on my way to class, but I just got an email saying it’s been canceled? So… I don’t know, think I’m just gonna grab a coffee and study a bit in the library.”
“No fucking way, my class just got canceled as well! I was just debating if I should catch a train back home to be honest… But hey, this is random, but you wanna grab a coffee together?” Jack asked with an almost nervous smile.
David felt his own mouth turn up in a reassuring grin and he found himself nodding. “Yeah, definitely up for that.”
Maybe embarrassing himself on public transport had its advantages.
