Work Text:
“Are we there yet?” Amelia groaned, shooting her middle finger up at the blonde who was smirking at her.
“Come on Amelia, I thought you had stamina,” Maya teased, sticking her tongue out at the neurosurgeon.
“Children, children, calm yourselves,” Meredith intervened, though she silently agreed with her sister. They had been hiking to their camping spot for about half an hour and it seemed like they were not going to stop anytime soon.
“Will you all just trust me?” Maya asked, turning so she was walking backwards and looking at the group.
“How is she doing that?” Maggie grumbled.
“I don’t know but I’m jealous,” Amelia replied. “Show-off!” she shouted at the firefighter who simply grinned.
“Come on Aunt Amelia! It’s fun!” Bailey said. He had been hiking next to Aunt Maya the entire time and now he was copying her, walking backwards with a large grin, pushing the woman away when she ruffled his hair.
“We’re only a few minutes away,” said Maya.
“Maya, we need to take a break. The bambine are getting tired,” Carina said.
Maya looked at Ellis and Zola, smirking. “Are you sure? They seem perfectly fine to me,” she responded, laughing as Carina cursed her, in Italian, under her breath.
Ellis and Zola were happily walking alongside Kai, pointing out all the animals they could spot and Kai pointed out the plants, making it a competition to see which one there was more of.
“We’re fine Aunt Maya!” Zola shouted, amused that her other aunts and her mom were struggling.
The firefighter sighed, coming down to take each of their backpacks then proceeded to lead like she hadn’t just added twenty pounds to her load.
“I can’t with her,” Amelia groaned, though she was relieved she was no longer carrying anything. Her shoulders and back were sore and this was not her idea of fun which made it ten times worse.
“Seriously, how?” Maggie asked, receiving a shrug from Meredith and a claim from Amelia that she was Super Girl.
“You guys are weak,” Ellis stated, giggling at their stunned faces.
“Why I oughta,” Amelia teased, acting as if she was about to snatch the girl up.
Ellis squealed and ran up to her Auntie Maya, making sure she was able to keep an eye on her Auntie Amelia while she walked next to her.
“Can we stop now?” Maggie groaned.
Maya shook her head as she dropped all of the bags to the ground. “We’re here,” she announced, laughing as Meredith, Maggie, and Amelia plopped to the ground.
Carina sat on a log and admired their surroundings. There were tall trees everywhere she looked, the branches were creating a perfect mix of shade and sun, there was a beautiful lake that sparkled a few hundred feet in front of them, and there were birds and squirrels flitting about all around them. Despite the fact that Maya had brought her out here before, the scenery never failed to take her breath away.
“Ok, so maybe this was worth it,” Amelia said once she had drunk some of her water and taken a proper look around.
“I told you to trust me!” Maya shouted from where she had already gotten halfway through setting up her and Carina’s tent with the help of Bailey.
“I will never understand how she has so much enthusiasm after hiking for like thirty-five minutes,” said Maggie.
Carina laughed. “Neither will I, and I am married to her,” she said, chuckling at the other three women.
“We’ve made it!” Andy exclaimed, the rest of 19 following close behind.
“Took you long enough,” Maya teased, laughing as her team grumbled and shot her glares.
“We only fell like fifty feet behind you,” said Vic.
“We still beat you!” Bailey exclaimed, shooting the firefighters a toothy grin.
“That’s only cause your Aunt Maya took their bags,” Jack replied, gesturing to Carina, Amelia, Maggie, and Meredith.
“They were complaining,” Ellis said. “It was faster when Auntie Maya took their things.”
“And quieter,” Zola added with a smirk.
“If I wasn’t so exhausted I would come over there and throw you three into the lake,” Meredith said, shooting her children a playful glare.
“This is clearly not your thing, huh?” Travis asked as he and Vic started to set their tent up.
“Definitely not,” Maggie said.
“Completely out of my comfort zone,” Amelia responded.
“I like it out here, it’s peaceful,” Kai said.
“Of course you do,” Amelia said, smiling at them lovingly.
“It’s a cool place, Aunt Maya,” Tuck said.
“How did you find it?” Joey asked.
“I used to come here a lot with Mason,” Maya revealed, unable to look at the group as she continued her explanation. “Whenever things with Lane would get rough, I would take us out here and we would just sit and enjoy the peacefulness. I would play music and Mason would sketch anything and everything he saw. It was a bit of bonding for the two of us, something that united us against Lane despite our rocky relationship.”
“That’s nice,” Vic said, shooting a sympathetic smile towards her friend.
“It was,” she said softly.
“So, once we get these tents set up, should we go swimming?” Andy asked to get the attention away from her friend, receiving agreements and cheers from all around.
Carina and Maya were sharing a tent, Vic and Travis, Andy and Robert, Jack and Dean, Amelia and Kai, Maggie and Meredith, the Grey-Shepherd children, and Ben, Tuck, and Joey.
Maya and Bailey, her little helper, assisted everyone with whatever they needed since they had finished setting up hers and Carina’s tent and the kids as well. Maya was already dressed in her red two-piece with an old t-shirt thrown over, and Bailey was in his swim trunks and the t-shirt he was wearing on their hike.
“Bailey, sunscreen or I’m not swimming with you,” Maya said, laughing as the boy groaned in annoyance but allowed the blonde to put sunscreen on his body. “You too, Elly-belly.”
“Ok,” the six-year-old said, allowing her auntie to slather on sunscreen.
Zola had applied most of it herself with some help from her Aunt Amelia for her back. With that, she and Bailey went right for the water, which was refreshing and cooled them immensely from the sun.
“Come on Aunt Maya!” Bailey exclaimed, shrieking as the blonde shucked off her shirt and dove right in, splashing him and his siblings.
Carina was simply admiring her wife and how her swimsuit hugged all of her curves, showed off her muscular back and arms, and gave the brunette a teasing peek of her abs. It didn’t help that the water was making her skin glisten and was tantalizing her, traveling places Carina wished her mouth and fingers were instead.
“Stop staring,” Amelia said, nudging Carina with a smirk.
“I cannot help it,” she replied, licking her lips at the sight of Maya’s muscles rippling in a show of strength as she threw Ellis and Bailey further into the water. Zola, Joey, and Tuck launched themselves off the firefighter’s shoulders, the children and teens laughing when their heads popped out from underneath and swimming back for more. “I’m so in love with her.”
“We know,” Maggie said before walking into the water with Meredith by her side.
The OB shook her head at her friends but nonetheless followed Amelia down to the lake where most of the group had already joined Maya and the children. They were chatting, laughing, and splashing one another, Robert eventually exiting the water with Dean and Jack to help them start grilling hotdogs and burgers over the fire.
“Aunt Carina, how far along are you?” Bailey asked as he swam circles around her.
“I’m sixteen weeks pregnant,” she said, smiling softly at him as he stopped swimming and stood in front of her.
“That means you still have a long time before the baby is here, right?”
“Si, that’s right.”
“Like how long? I want to meet my new cousin.”
Carina chuckled. “I have to be at least twenty-nine weeks before the bambina or bambino is going to be healthy enough to survive outside of my body.”
“That means you’re months away, right?”
Carina nodded.
“Ok,” he said, diving back under the water to pop out in front of his Aunt Maya who was just leaning against a rock and watching all of her friends have fun in the lake.
“Auntie Maya?”
“What’s up buddy?”
“Is my cousin going to be a boy or a girl?”
Maya smiled down at him. “We don’t know yet.”
“Oh,” Bailey said. “When will you know?”
“Remember how we were talking about the baby shower?”
“Yeah.”
“Well that’s when everyone is going to find out. We’re going to get Uncle Ben and Aunt Miranda to order a lot of cans of silly string, and whatever color it is will tell us if it’s going to be a boy or a girl.”
“We’re gonna have a silly string fight?” he asked, looking up at her with an excited gleam in his eyes.
“We are,” she confirmed.
“Pink is for a girl and blue is for a boy, right?”
“Right.”
“When’s the party?”
“Not until next year,” Maya said, chuckling at Bailey’s pout.
“That’s so long from now,” he whined.
“It is, but it will make it all more exciting.”
“I guess so,” Bailey grumbled.
“Come on, what do you say we go get your Aunt Carina a little more wet?” Maya asked with an evil smirk, the same smirk appearing on Bailey’s face.
Bailey swam up in front of his Aunt Carina and started talking to her in order to distract her from Aunt Maya who was sneaking up behind her. Carina shrieked as she felt herself being picked up and tossed into the water. She came up and glared at her nephew and Maya who were high-fiving and laughing at her drowned rat appearance.
“It’s so on,” Carina said, lunging for her wife.
Maya effortlessly glided away, cursing (but laughing) at Travis when he picked her up, tossing her into the water and effectively splashing Amelia, Kai, Maggie, Meredith, Andy, and Vic. Soon enough everyone was engaged in the water fight, laughing and shrieking as the firefighters managed to toss every single doctor into the water or drench them completely at least once.
“Alright, alright, you guys win!” Amelia said once she had been tossed in the water by both Vic and Maya.
Maya and Bailey high-fived one another as the rest of 19 began flexing their muscles and teasing the doctors at their poor performance. Noticing her wife relaxing against the rocks a good twenty feet or so away from the group, Maya swam up and pressed herself against the brunette, giving her a cocky grin.
“You’re a bit wet, Dr. DeLuca,” she said, taking note of how Carina’s eyes were wandering over her body.
“Mmm, I’m more than a bit, bambina,” Carina stated, moving so she was speaking directly into Maya’s ear. “I’m soaked,” she replied, playfully biting Maya’s earlobe before pulling back, satisfied when it produced the desired effect of a quiet gasp and darkened pupils.
“Is that so?” Maya husked, leaning forward so her lips were a hairbreadth away from touching Carina’s, her gaze getting lost in the depths of sparkling brown eyes.
“Si,” Carina said, moving her hands to wrap around Maya’s waist, giving her ass a squeeze. “You know what your muscles do to me. Baciami, Maya.”
Maya pressed their lips together in a passionate kiss, her hands tangling themselves in brown locks as they languidly explored one another’s mouths. Neither of them were trying to start anything because of how exposed they were and because there were children around.
“Yo, Lovebirds! Dinner’s ready!”
The blonde whined when Carina broke their kiss off to respond to the neurosurgeon.
“Si, un momento!” she shouted before turning her attention back to Maya. “I think they want us.”
Maya grinned, scooping Carina up into her arms bridal style, laughing at the brunette’s squealing as she held onto Maya for dear life. She carried the OB out of the water, only setting her down once she reached their towels.
“Grazie, amore mio,” Carina said as Maya handed her a water bottle.
“Prego,” she replied, smirking at the small whine that left Carina’s mouth. “Come on, we should dry off and get changed.”
They did just that, drying themselves off and slipping into sweatpants and sweatshirts. Carina was wearing one of Maya’s Station 19 hoodies and the blonde was sporting her old team USA sweatshirt. They joined the group at the table and chairs they had brought with them, thanking Robert, Dean, and Jack for dinner. They had grilled hotdogs, burgers, and corn on the cob over the fire, everyone eagerly tucking in and chattering away. The firefighters made sure to seal everything tightly so as not to attract wildlife to their garbage or their leftovers.
They moved to sit around the fire pit, beers, wine, water, and juice being drunk as they all exchanged stories, whether it was from work or their personal lives.
“I thought we could use this,” said Kai when they came back to the fire pit with their guitar.
“Auntie Maya, sing!” Ellis exclaimed.
“No way, Cap can sing?” Dean asked.
“This I have to see,” declared Jack.
“No way, not happening,” Maya stated, ignoring the begging and pleading of the doctors and her team.
“Please Aunt Maya?” Zola asked.
“Pretty please?” added Bailey.
Maya shook her head. “Nope, that was between us and Carina.”
“Please Mai?” Andy pleaded.
Her resolve was beginning to crumble, mainly because she knew they wouldn’t shut up about it until she gave in. “Fine,” she grumbled, blushing as everyone began cheering. “Any requests?”
“A Christmas song!” Bailey exclaimed, the other kids and teens agreeing, the adults hopping on board with the idea as well.
“All I Want For Christmas Is You,” Zola said.
“Oh alright,” Maya replied, taking a deep breath as Kai started playing the opening notes on their guitar.
Vic and Dean nodded to their friend, letting her know they would be her backup.
I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
I don't care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you
Yeah
I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need (and I)
Don't care about the presents underneath the Christmas tree
I don't need to hang my stocking there upon the fireplace
Santa Claus won't make me happy with a toy on Christmas Day
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas is you
You, baby
Oh, I won't ask for much this Christmas
I won't even wish for snow (and I)
I'm just gonna keep on waiting underneath the mistletoe
I won't make a list and send it to the North Pole for Saint Nick
I won't even stay awake to hear those magic reindeer click
'Cause I just want you here tonight
Holding on to me so tight
What more can I do?
Oh, baby, all I want for Christmas is you
You, baby
Oh-oh, all the lights are shining so brightly everywhere (so brightly, baby)
And the sound of children's laughter fills the air (oh, oh, yeah)
And everyone is singing (oh, yeah)
I hear those sleigh bells ringing
Santa, won't you bring me the one I really need? (Yeah, oh)
Won't you please bring my baby to me?
Oh, I don't want a lot for Christmas
This is all I'm asking for
I just wanna see my baby standing right outside my door
Oh, I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
Oh, baby, all I want for Christmas is you
You, baby
All I want for Christmas is you, baby
All I want for Christmas is you, baby
All I want for Christmas is you, baby
All I want for Christmas (all I really want) is you, baby
All I want (I want) for Christmas (all I really want) is you, baby
Maya was staring at Carina throughout the entire song, focusing on those brown eyes she got lost looking into as she sang.
“Holy shit,” Amelia breathed out as the firefighter blushed heavily at the applause, cheers, and wolf whistles she was receiving.
“Why the hell did we not know you could sing?!” Travis exclaimed.
“She thinks she’s bad,” Ellis piped up.
Every single person looked at Maya with disbelief. The blonde wanted nothing more than to crawl into a hole and die, her skin burning with all of the attention.
“You think you’re bad?” Vic asked, completely astonished.
Maya shrugged, playing with her wedding band as she nervously bounced her foot up and down on the forest floor. “I’m certainly not good,” she said, wincing at the yelling and protests that came flying her way.
“How do you not think you’re good?!”
“Mai, you killed it!”
“Your voice is amazing!”
“You must be deaf because that was awesome!”
“Are you serious?!”
“I can’t believe you right now!”
“It was Lane,” she muttered once everyone was silenced by Carina’s sharp glare. Maya hung her head down as she delved into the explanation. “He caught me singing when I was warming up for track practice. He told me that singing was useless and that I was a god awful singer so I should put my focus towards something I was decent at and something that I could actually improve on, which was running. I never sang in front of anyone after that ever again, I was too ashamed.”
“I swear every time you tell me something else about that man it only increases my urge to hunt him down and kill him,” Andy growled.
“So why did you sing to Ellis?” Meredith asked.
Maya finally looked up to meet everyone’s eyes. “She had a nightmare one night when I was babysitting and she couldn’t calm down. She told me that sometimes you sing to her to help her so I swallowed down my embarrassment and started singing.”
“Zola and I heard so we went to Ellis’s room and snuggled with them,” Bailey added.
“That’s why I found you all crammed on Ellis’s bed,” Maggie said, the four of them nodding.
“Well Mai, I think I speak for all of us when we say we would not be the slightest bit disgusted if we heard you singing around the station,” Vic said, earning a chorus of agreement from the team.
“Thanks,” she said softly, blinking back tears and giving her team a shy smile.
“Anyone else have any requests?” Kai asked.
The group sang a few more songs together, Maya, Dean, Vic, and Kai switching off the leads as everyone else sang back-up or hummed along and enjoyed the free entertainment.
Bailey was in Carina’s lap and Ellis was in Maya’s as everyone slowly started heading off to their tents, pair by pair, wishing everyone a goodnight. With a glance, the two wives stood up and carried the two children to their tent, tucking them into their sleeping bags and pressing kisses to their heads before zipping it closed and heading back to the fire.
“I think Carina and I are going to turn in. You guys got the fire?” Maya asked, as only her team remained.
“We’ve got it. Night Mai, night Carina,” Vic said.
“Buona notte,” Carina replied, waving to everyone before she and Maya made their way to the tent.
“Ladies first,” the firefighter said, bowing while holding the tent flap open and laughing as Carina playfully rolled her eyes.
“Grazie,” she said as she got settled on the air mattress, smiling softly as she watched Maya double-check everything was secure and take off her sweatshirt, leaving her in sweatpants and a t-shirt.
Maya crawled into the bed next to her wife, holding out her arms and sighing in content as Carina moved so she was in her arms, her head on her shoulder and their legs intertwined. She placed a chaste kiss to the brunette’s lips before pulling the thick blanket over the both of them.
“Ti amo, bambina,” Carina said, smiling sleepily at her wife.
“I love you too.”
With that, the wives fell asleep wrapped with one another, though Maya awoke rather abruptly only three hours later.
“Bailey?” she asked, blinking sleep out of her eyes to see the boy hovering over her.
“Ellis and Zola left to go sleep with Mom and Aunt Maggie. I’m scared,” he whispered, tears brimming his eyes.
Maya lifted the blanket, allowing him to crawl underneath and cuddle up on Maya’s right side since Carina was sound asleep on the left.
“Goodnight little dude,” she said, holding him close and on the verge of going right back to sleep.
“G’night Aunt Maya. Thank you,” he responded softly, snuggling into the blonde as he fell asleep almost instantly.
“You’re welcome,” Maya said through a yawn.
She felt her eyes closing almost immediately, and the next time she woke up she could see the sun shining softly outside. Seeing Bailey and Carina were still asleep, she carefully maneuvered herself out of their grasp, smiling softly when she saw Carina just reached out to hold Bailey close, the boy cuddling close to her. She threw on leggings and a long-sleeve compression shirt and slipped her trainers onto her feet, quietly unzipping the tent so she could step outside.
Maya made her way over to the table where she was greeted by Meredith, Maggie, Amelia, Kai, Ben, Tuck, and Joey. She thanked Ben for the bottle of water, taking a few sips to ease her dry throat.
“What are we making for breakfast?” Maya asked, looking over Tuck and Joey’s shoulders.
“Dad’s got the sausage and bacon, we’re in charge of toast and eggs,” Tuck explained.
“Gotcha, you boys better not burn my breakfast or there will be hell to pay,” she teased, chuckling when Joey playfully pushed her away.
Maya went over to chat with Meredith, Amelia, Kai, and Maggie for a bit before getting up to stretch.
“You’re going for a run, here?” Maggie asked incredulously.
“You all are going to complain if I try to bring you on a hike so yes, I’m running,” Maya said, standing up and plugging in her earbuds.
“Please be careful, we don’t need to be yelled at by an angry Italian first thing in the morning,” Amelia replied.
“I will, see you in a bit,” she said, waving to them as she jogged away.
“I won’t ever understand it and I’m insanely jealous,” Meredith said.
Maya knew exactly which trail she was taking, it was one she and Mason used to walk on sometimes if they got tired of just sitting around. She was about halfway through her run when she stopped in her tracks. She looked around, unplugged her earbuds and focused on everything around her to see if she could make out what had made that noise.
“Where’s Maya?” Carina asked through a yawn, shuffling over to her friends and resting her head on Amelia’s shoulders.
“She went on a run,” Maggie said.
The brunette nodded.
“You aren’t going to yell at us?” Amelia inquired.
She shook her head. “Maya’s dragged me out here more than once to go camping, and she goes running on the same trail every time. It was something she and Mason used to do if they decided they couldn’t sit still. It reminds her of when times were a little bit better between them,” Carina explained.
The group sat in silence after that, thanking Dean and Ben for the waters as everyone slowly began to arise and emerge from their tents.
“Maya’s on a run?” Andy asked as she sat across from Carina, leaning heavily on Robert as she was still trying to get her body to function.
Concern pinched Carina’s features when she noticed it had been almost an hour and a half, according to Maggie, since Maya had left. Normally she would be back within forty-five minutes or so. “She is,” Carina confirmed, biting her lip anxiously.
Vic tilted her head. “Then why do you look like you’ve seen a ghost?”
“Maya’s been gone for almost an hour and a half,” Amelia explained, rubbing a hand on Carina’s back to try and soothe her.
The team was instantly alert at this news.
“We should give it another ten minutes or so, and if she’s not back by then, we’ll go looking for her,” said Jack, the rest of 19 agreeing with the plan.
“This is so not happening to me,” Maya grumbled as she trekked back to their campsite, her arms and legs aching from the exertion and her body shivering from the cold. She knew if she didn’t get back soon her team would be looking for her, and she did not need 19 to be looking for her while she was on her way back, tired, but unharmed.
“Is that Maya?” Meredith asked, everyone looking up to see the blonde fire captain was indeed coming their way.
“Yeah, but I don’t believe what I’m seeing,” Jack replied, rubbing his eyes as if to make sure he wasn’t dreaming.
“Doggie!” Ellis exclaimed, racing over to her aunt.
“Ellis, be careful, you’re going to scare him,” Maya said gently, feeling the dog tremble in her arms and begin to whine.
“What the hell happened?” Andy asked.
“Will someone please just get me a blanket, water, and food for this guy?” Maya asked as she sat down, the dog curling up in a ball in her lap as best as he could. His ears were pressed flat against his head, he was shaking like a leaf, and he would start whining whenever someone other than Maya got too close.
Dean grabbed everything she had asked for, placing it in front of his friend. She grabbed the water bowl and slowly held it up in front of him, a soft smile coming to her face when he hesitantly poked his nose out to sniff it before deeming it good for him to drink. He quickly began lapping it up, and whined when Maya took it away. She held out the plate of bacon and sausage, her new furry companion gobbling it all up in three large bites. As he drank the water, she placed the blanket over both of them and gently began to pet him, being careful not to get caught in the knots and tangles she could feel all throughout his fur.
“Where did you find him?” Vic asked.
“I was about halfway through the trail when I heard whining, so I unplugged my earbuds and followed the noise to where I found him. He was limping and was moving at a really slow pace. I knelt down and called him over to me. He froze when he noticed I was there, so I sat down and waited for about ten minutes for him to approach me. When he did, he started sniffing me up and down, and once he was done, he sat in front of me and allowed me to pet him. I wasn’t going to leave the poor guy out there all by himself, so I picked him up and carried him back here after I ripped off a part of my shirt to wrap up his leg,” Maya explained.
“What type of dog is he?” Amelia asked.
“I think he’s a black german shepherd,” said Zola. “Based on the size, pointed ears, and body shape, that would make the most sense. I’d guess he’s only two or three years old.”
“He’s pretty,” Ellis said, wishing she could pet him. Meredith had a firm hold on her youngest and Bailey was being held back by Amelia.
The dog looked up at Maya with his amber eyes, nudging her hand with his nose to get her to keep petting him. She chuckled but resumed her petting, grinning widely when he rested his head on her thigh.
“I think you might be bringing a new addition to the house sooner rather than later,” Maggie whispered to Carina.
“Si, I think so,” Carina agreed, her heart warming at how happy and calm Maya seemed to be with the dog.
With some help from the group, they constructed a makeshift leash for the dog, which let Maya bring him out to the lake to try and properly clean him up. He was a good dog and seemed to enjoy the water, allowing Maya to scrub him down and dry him up as best as she could. She brushed through his fur with a comb Vic had brought who insisted Maya could use it because they were easy to replace. She apologized softly to him each time he whimpered because the comb had gotten stuck on a knot of fur. After taking a closer look at his leg, she noticed it was really just a superficial scratch that would likely just need some ointment and a bandage. Once that was done, she led him back to the group who had saved her a plate for breakfast and were packing up their tents and their belongings.
Since Maya had a dog she had to carry this time, Dean took her bag and nobody complained the entire forty-five minute hike back to the parking lot. Maya thanked everyone for coming out and apologized for having to cut the trip short since the dog appeared.
“It’s not a problem Maya, we’ll just have to come back sometime next year,” said Meredith, the kids shouting their agreements from the car since they were already buckled in.
“Thanks Meredith, be safe!” she yelled as she made her way over to her and Carina’s car, putting the black dog in the back before she climbed in after him, the dog immediately curling up on her lap.
The drive to the nearest animal shelter was only half an hour, and after the check-up, he was deemed healthy, his leg got wrapped up properly, and he didn’t have a microchip or a collar.
“What does this mean for us?” Maya asked as she twirled her wedding band around her finger.
“We’re going to get the word out that we’ve got a two year old black german shepherd, and if nobody comes to claim him within three to five days, we will give you a call if you’re still interested in adopting him,” the worker, Tristan, explained.
Maya thanked him and left him her phone number, giving Carina a soft smile as she placed a hand on her wife’s thigh to stop her movements on the ride home. The sixth day, they got a call asking if they were still interested in adopting him. Maya went to pick him up from the shelter and Carina went to buy everything they would need for him. Food, bowls, toys, treats, a collar and leash, and tags. They took him to the vet that same day to get him caught up on vaccines and to get him a microchip.
And just like that, Smokey became the newest addition to the DeLuca-Bishop clan.
