the horizon

Summary:

They’re sat together on the beach, toes in the water as they watch the sun dip below the horizon, a slow and steady descent. Inevitable.

If Stella could write poetry, she’d describe how the scene perfectly mirrored the way she felt about the fairy next to her, who sat transfixed by the sight, her fingertips gliding aimlessly through the shallow water.

She’d wax lyrical to all of Solaria about the way the sunset caused the water to shimmer like molten gold. She’d tell them that the sight before her was the perfect marriage of sun and sea. She’d tell them that was why she loved the beach, that it was more than just skimpy bathing suits and the opportunity to tan.

She’d tell them how much she loved Aisha, fairy of oceans.

The sun’s last rays hit them, and Stella turns to watch her beloved. Watches as Aisha is illuminated as if she’s lit from within, as if she’s the source of this heavenly glow. Her breath catches.

Her heart feels so, so full.

If she was further out in the water right now, surely the weight of it would drag her down into its depths.

Fairy of the sun, moon and all the stars. That’s what they call her. But right now, Stella embodies not the sun, but the moon. She revolves around Aisha, content to orbit about the vastness of it all, of this emotion.

Sighing, she shares this thought with Aisha, the water, and the sunlight.

In turn, Aisha draws her close, close enough to hear her heart thump and feel the strength in the arms that wrap around her as if trying to draw her closer still. Close enough for them to become a single heavenly body of water.

She feels so, so safe.

The feeling lodges itself in her throat, silencing her gently.

Aisha whispers to her, a salty breeze in her ear, and shares her thoughts with Stella. Tells her that, if Stella is the moon, she is the ocean that is drawn towards it, even when it’s no longer in the sky. That the moon is what guides the ocean, pulling it up each time it falls, fighting against gravity in the form of tides.

She tells Stella that the moon is what moves the ocean, and that without it there would only be stillness and silence and a dark emptiness.

Stella shivers, cuddling closer, not yet giving up on their fusion into a singular being. She never wants to leave.

The sun has finished its slow dive out of their line of sight, though its not fully dark yet. Stella feels something like disappointment, which is silly. She is reluctant to face the coming darkness. Still, she peeks out from the embrace she hides in and spots the moon. Its peeking out from behind the clouds, too. A mirror image.

The moon is full and bright, filling the absence of the sun seamlessly. In this light too, Aisha is a vision, all smooth dark marble and kind openness. Silver ripples over her braids, contrasting with her skin to highlight her high cheekbones, her wide nose, the playful curve of her lips. There is a casual majesty to her, and Stella feels as if a stranger would be able to tell that she is the future Queen of the oceans with a single glance.

Aisha is smiling again, softer than before, like she knows a secret meant only for her. Her eyes alight on the silver orb in the sky, her neck craned as if she too feels it’s pull the way the ocean does.

Once again, Aisha turns and whispers in her ear.

“Look Stella, it’s you.”
