Tradition dictates

Summary:

Enid dances the mamushka at her and Wednesday's wedding. That's it, that's the fic

Notes:

I wrote this in the middle of the night after having cried heavily beforehand so I was probably in a state of delirium. The characters might be OOC, it might not make much sense but I had to write it

Work Text:

Enid was sitting at the table with trepidation and excitement filling every fibre of her newly married self. Enid Addams, it has a nice ring to it she thinks, not least because now she shared Wednesday's surname. Well, her and her entire family who all seemed to have turned up for their special day. Enid could honestly say that all those hours spent guessing what her wedding might have been like when she was younger could not have prepared her for this moment; what 6 year old could have guessed that one of the bridesmaids would have two heads? Or that a walking wig would be the life and soul of the party?

The other thing she wouldn't have guessed is that her newly betrothed would leave quite so soon after the party had started, normally this would worry her but she knew what was about to happen was the fruition of months of rehearsing for her and Wednesday. The culmination of the entire ceremony, the thing that would cement her as an Addams (and not the thing that brought them their rings, despite how helpful the hand was). The mamushka. According to Gomez's, long, spirited, and frequent ravings about the topic, it is a tradition of the family's dating back for as long as there have been Addams' to remember. And now, it was Enid's turn to take part.

Just then, Thing scurried through the doors at the far end of the room and started to make his way towards Gomez and Morticia taking care not to be stepped on by any dancing guests. Once he reached the table he gave a few hand signals and then turned to Enid, giving a thumbs up sign before scuttling away somewhere. It was time. Wednesday was ready, Enid had to be ready, the Addams parents couldn't have been prouder. Gomez stood and called for silence so he could make the announcement.

"Everyone! Everyone! It is time for the most important part of our ceremony!"

The band quietened down and a hush fel over the crowd as they waited for Gomez to continue.

"As you all well know, tonight we welcome a new member into our fold. The one who managed to invigorate the black heart of my little scorpion. None other, than Enid here."

Morticia then chimed in herself "While normally Gomez here leads the mamushka, it is tradition that for a wedding the betrothed must dance it instead."

Gomez once again spoke "Indeed so my beloved. And so, to lead this mamushka, is our own spiderling, Wednesday."

At his words the doors to the room swung open to reveal none other than Wednesday Addams, dressed i a long, black satin dress with white sleeves and collar clearly meant to emulate the traditional dress of the Cossacks that taught this dance to the Addams' many centuries prior. She walked to the middle of the floor, the crowd parting before her like flesh parts for a blade. When she stopped she held her hand out towards her new wife, calling out to her in her typical monotone.

"Mon loup chérie, join me."

Enid replied, "Of course πολυαγαπημένη μου." with barely contained glee and all but skipped her way towards her love's outstretched hand. While she moved, Wednesday began her speech.

"Taught to us by our Cossack cousins, the mamushka is an Addams family tradition dating back to Lucifer knows when. We danced the mamushka while Nero fiddled. We danced the mamushka at Waterloo. We danced the mamushka for jack the ripper and my uncle fester. And now Enid Sinclair, mon désir le plus profond, we dance it for you." Having said this she clutched the werewolf's hand in a vice like grip and started to circle around.

Enid remembered back to their numerous practice sessions and started to spin as well, always staying on the opposite side of the circle Wednesday was drawing between them. Behind them, various Addams' pulled out tambourines and played along with the band that had struck up the traditional tune. Morticia and Gomez looked on with nothing but pride for their little storm cloud.

The music started to get faster so the girls put more of a spring into their step, skipping now instead of walking their circle with Enid adopting a huge grin on her face to counter Wednesday's practiced indifference. The two suddenly broke apart from this routine and clapped their hands to their legs and then slapping the other's hand before turning each to one side.

Once both had taken a few steps they once again clapped, then came about face and did it again. Then turned once more and did it twice again. They came back to meet in the middle, facing each other. Enid both loved and hated this part; she loved it because she got to look into Wednesday eyes that so enrapture her and see the small, barely there spark that showed she was enjoying this. She hated it however because it meant she had to butt heads with her new wife, something that lead to many a bruise in training. Yet tonight, either from the excitement, the practice, or just plain magic, she wasn't nearly as bothered when their foreheads met with a thunk.

While still slightly dazed, Enid faced her beloved and prepared for the next section of the extravagant dance. She lifted her leg in a perfect mirror image to her partner, hitting it and then her chest with her hand. Her and Wednesday's hands then met between them before they both got on one leg with a hand above their heads. Their hands rhan moved quickly, hips to chest and then the other's face. Despite the pain it caused Enid to lay a hand on her love she knew it was all part of it so went along with it, Wednesday had in fact insisted she put more power into the swing during rehearsals.

Enid then crouched down and Wednesday lifted her leg over Enid's crouched form, crouching down herself so that Enid could then do the same leaving her with her back to the black haired beauty. There was a brief moment of nerves, of fear over what could go wrong before she felt hands beneath her feet catapult her into the air, somersaulting her way further across the little clearing the dancers had made for themselves. By now the two had completely forgotten that there was anyone else in the room, it was just Wednesday, Enid, and their passionate display.

Wednesday then pulled four long knives from her dress, typically at this point in a mamushka two of these would be thrown to the partner for the next section. The happy couple however had decided to forgo this particular aspect in favour of something more them. And so Enid extended her claws out and bared them for the room to see, painted a bright blue to match the sparks that should have been flying from the blades, of which Wednesday now had double the usual amount. The Addams girl ran these knives along each other, making sparks fly between them and the two brides, while Enid scraped her claws along each other with a sickening squeal. Every Addams there savoured the sound with glee. The two jumped twice, windmilling their arms as they did before meeting their weapons in a mess of metal and claw between themselves. Wednesday took a swipe at Enid and when she dodged it kept spinning in a whirlwind of energy and passion. Their weapons met one final time before the two backed off one final time.

Wednesday then threw two of the knives at Enid who returned them while the other two were heading her way. This juggling act continued for a while until Enid grabbed each of the knives herself, one beneath each arm and one clutched in each fist at which point Wednesday pulled out one more. She threw it high in the air and Enid, rather than wait on the ground to swallow it as was customary, leapt through the air and grabbed the dagger between her teeth.

There she stayed for a second, until Wednesday started to sing (singing for Wednesday meaning speaking flatly with some cadence change) with the full backing of her family. "Mamushka. Mamushka. She danced the mamushka. Hey hey hey hey hey hey." She was just thinking how perfect this moment between her and Wednesday was when suddenly.

"WAAAAIIIITT!"

Gomez let out a shout and the two were dragged back into a world where other people existed. Other people such as Morticia who joined her husband in verse.

"We declare as mommy and daddums, that this is detestable wretch is henceforth an Addams! So!"

Wednesday fixed her parents with a stare. Not her trademark death stare but certainly one of annoyance, yet also affection. It was while levelling this gaze that she pulled the knife from Enid's mouth and threw it in the general direction of her brother Pugsley.

She then turned back to Enid and held out her arm in an invitation to link them. "Shall we très cher?" In answer, Enid linked her arm with all the elation she could muster. From where she stood Enid could see it, the barely there lift of a lip corner that showed Wednesday's true feelings, she was enjoying herself a lot. Perhaps as a symptom of this she even joined Enid in song as they once again circled. "Hey hey hey hey hey hey! Let's dance the dance, of eternal love!" They embraced, looking into each other's eyes as their family erupted into cheers all around them. Lost to the world at large, but perfectly content with each other.
