Work Text:
I can't drop everything for you, do you understand? I won't. Because that's just who I am. Kei said that with as much malice he could channel into his words, searching for a glimpse of hurt in the other's brown eyes.
Kai just looked back at him, bemused. I know, Kei. I know.
And all it did was frustrate Kei because he knew Kai thought he was better than that. He knew that the blonde believed he had a heart underneath the iron walls. It simply wasn't true, and Kai deluding himself into believing that was outrageous, especially when it gives rise to the possibility that Kai might expect to be saved one day. By Kei. Which Kei may not be able to do.
Kai was a liability. He was just extra weight. He was of no use to Kei.
And yet, his mind whispered. Shut the fuck up, he whispered back viciously.
Kai was just a human, a very stubborn, thickheaded, selfless, vulnerable human who Kei would have to take care of. So be it. Of all the tasks and burdens imposed on him, this was the only one he would take willingly. Stupid, blonde, selfless Kai. Stupid Kai.
