His apartment looked different.
He’d moved things since she’d last been there, his bed was against the wall, one side up against the window. There were cups strewn across it, filled with various half finished drinks. From the looks of it, one was simply a pint glass of liquor. His sheets were unmade.
He’d moved his couch, too, right near the sliding glass door that led to his sad excuse of a balcony, facing outwards. It was an odd decision, although, the past few days had been awfully hot, perhaps he just wanted to sit as close as he could to the pitiful balcony. There was hardly enough space to stand, after all.
She went back into his bedroom, taking a sip from the tepid liquor on the windowsill, staring out into the dark sky. There was a slight pain in her temples. A storm was coming.
She fought against the urge to make his bed. She wasn’t his housewife, or even his girlfriend, she just showed up every now and again for good sex and a good nights sleep with the warmth of another person.
But it was undeniable to Ada; she craved him. In both her waking and sleeping moments, she desired the feel of his chest against her back as they lay together, she desired the feel of him inside her, the feel of his lips on her skin. More than that, she desired the way he looked at her as if she was the answer to all his questions, and yet the object of many more. He was the nicest thing she’d ever come across in her life, and while she hadn’t come across many nice things in her life, it still meant something to her.
She gave in and tugged the sheets into place, not because she was his housewife or his girlfriend, but because it irritated her. She debated climbing into or onto the bed when she was done, quite literally to lay in wait. Perhaps she’d take off her clothes.
He would definitely get the wrong idea. She wasn’t here for sex. What was she here for again? Did she just drag herself to his apartment to taste what she could never have, what she wanted but didn’t want?
Intimacy. To not be alone for another night, until the next night she wound up alone. It would probably be the next after this one. Ada never stayed long.
It was to protect him, she told herself, to make sure her employers didn’t catch on and have him killed, or her killed. Was it to protect him? Or was it to take herself away from a place she never wanted to leave, before he could wake up and she’d have to stay, because she could never bear the look in his eyes when she left. She often compared him to a little puppy being left behind.
‘You’ve been drinking my liquor.’ He said upon entering. She’d heard him come in, the front door was obscenely loud, but she just waited with her back to his bedroom door.
She turned and took him in, all gorgeous muscles and pretty blue eyes. His shirt stretched slightly against his chest, and it made her wonder, perhaps she did want sex, because he looked absolutely delicious.
’I deserve a drink after getting through your pitiful security systems.’ She countered. Leon’s smile reached his eyes, igniting a boyish sparkle.
He asked why she was there, and she couldn’t think of a proper response. Because I like your company, because I think about you when I touch myself, because you’re warm and sweet and I’m addicted to you.
’Maybe I just wanted your company.’ She answered eventually, and h walked over to his closet and began to change. Ada stole occasional glances.
‘Sincere, coming from you.’
Leon was in nothing but his boxers, and he was truly drool-worthy. Did you want anything to wear, he asked her, and she opted to change into one of his old metal band t-shirts and a pair of his boxers. When she took the clothes from him, he cupped her chin in his fingers and connected their lips. The softness of it made her knees weak.
‘I was going to watch the storm from here.’ He explained as he led her to his couch by the glass balcony door. There was a light drizzle outside. ‘We could order takeout?’
She nodded in agreement, and Leon gathered up some blankets before they curled up on the couch together, the only light being his phone where he was ordering pizza, and the orange glow of the streetlights below.
Ada had been taken on dates, many dates, mostly expensive and with rich men she was hired to gather information from, but it was all fake, all stupid and overpriced. This, sitting in Leon’s apartment as they wait for a storm, with some cheap pizza coming, was the most romantic setting she’d ever been in.
It was good enough for her. She’d never been interested in the typical ‘womanly dream’, falling in love with a nice man who would give her a home and bring her flowers every Friday, and having small children to take care of. Ada thrived off of instability, off of recklessness. Perhaps it was why she was so drawn to Leon. He was supposed to be unattainable, after all.
The rain was getting heavier outside, finally audible against the glass door as the wind blew towards it. His skin was warm against hers under the fluffy blanket, and his eyes were fixed on the dark sky. Ada leaned upwards and pressed her lips against his jawline in a lingering kiss. Leon let out a shaky breath that made Ada’s heart skip a beat, before turning his head and catching her lips properly.
Fuck unattainable, he was irresistible and he was hers. She kissed him harder, delighting in his little moan as he pulled her in closer and held her tighter. He held her and kissed her as if she were pure, as if she had never committed a single crime, and he made love to her as if she’d never told him a single lie. It was addictive to be made to feel as if she was a good person.
She forced her tongue into his mouth. Leon made a shaky sound before his hands came up to cup her face. Unexpectedly, he pulled back, still holding her face and resting his nose against hers.
‘We’ll miss it.’ He said quietly, and she wasn’t sure whether he meant the storm, the pizza or both.
‘We can be quick.’ She countered, matching his tone and volume with a little smile.
‘We’re never quick.’ She could hear the smile in his voice. He wasn’t wrong, she was as thorough in bed as she was in everything else she did.
Instead of protesting further, Ada pressed a quick kiss on the corner of his lips before leaning back into his touch and letting him embrace her. He kissed her hair, and she could feel the smile against her head.
‘Ada.’ He said quietly, and for a moment it stumped her the way in which he spoke her name, not a question, but rather as some kind of praise, as if her name was the most wonderful thing to pass his lips.
‘Yes?’
He kissed her again, over and over, anywhere his lips would reach until they were both a stupid, giggling mess like some stupid young people in some stupid, sweet relationship. Leon squeezed her tight, pressing one more kiss to her cheek. He was holding her so tight she thought she may not be able to breathe properly. When he loosened his grip, she playfully pinched his thigh.
‘You could’ve killed me.’ She said, although both of them probably knew it was untrue. Ada could easily have killed him before he got the chance.
‘You’re cute.’ He replied simply in justification. Ada rolled her eyes.
’You always want to kill cute things?’ She asked skeptically, narrowing her eyes at him. Leon’s face lights up in a smile.
‘It’s scientific fact that when humans see something cute, their brains can’t handle it and they impulsively want to squeeze the cute thing to death.’
‘That’s bull.’ Ada shot back, but couldn’t stop the way she leant back in to claim his lips before he could say otherwise. Being squeezed to death by the only real person in her life wouldn’t be so bad.
The first rumble of thunder descended, almost making Ada jump, and Leon was suddenly enamoured, all focus diverted to the darkness outside the window. When there was a knock on the door, she pushed him back down to sit, not wanting to distract him from his strange obsession. She wasn’t his girlfriend or his housewife, but she didn’t know what it was like to be happily obsessed with something the way he seemed to be, and she enjoyed watching it.
Who was she to take him away from it?
She brought the pizza back to the couch. I could’ve gotten that, he said, although his eyes deceived him as they remained fixed on the sky, even the smell of food anticlimactic in comparison to whatever he was aching to see.
Lightning streaked across the sky in white hot veins, like something out of a horror movie. She could kind of bring herself to understand his interest now. She never had time to indulge in these mundane things. If there was a storm, it would be in her way of sleeping, or disrupting her travel, and dare she take a moment to look, to really look, she would be swept away by the cold arms of death itself.
Yet here she was.
‘It’s beautiful.’ She said, and she wasn’t lying, although she wasn’t sure if she was simply talking about the storm.
‘Its why I like them so much, reminds me of this girl I know. Reckless and unpredictable but gorgeous as fuck.’
Ada wanted to cringe and roll her eyes, but instead she straddled his legs, forcing him to look up into her eyes.
‘That’s woman to you, Kennedy.’
With that, she claimed his lips once more.
