Work Text:
The sound of plastic against the countertop echoed from their bathroom. George rolled his eyes and dropped his book down onto the bed. "Alex! The timer hasn't even gone off yet, it's not going to give you an accurate reading so stop looking at it," he called irritably.
The aforementioned alpha stuck his head out of the bathroom and then walked over to the bed. He sat down next to the omega with a small pout. George reached out and brushed a hand over the side of his mate's face. "I know that you're excited. But we've only tried once or twice since I've gone off birth control because we've both been so busy at the hospital. It's probably going to be negative," he sighed.
Alex reached up so that he was touching his mate's hand with his own. He moved his face sideways and kissed the other doctor's palm. "I know, but if it's positive then I want to be there to see it as soon as we get the results. I mean, we might be having a baby!"
"Or the stress from our job as surgeons could have put my cycle off," George whispered. He wanted it to be true just as much as his mate, but he didn't think that giving each other false hope was a good idea just in case he wasn't pregnant. They had been trying for such a short time, and they already had so much hope that it had worked after a week without his regular cycle.
The alpha let go of the omega's hand and then flopped down onto the bed. "I just want to see your belly all filled with my baby already," he said, waggling his eyebrows suggestively as he rolled over and placed his hand on top of George's stomach.
The omega opened his mouth to say something in return but was distracted as the kitchen timer that they had set for the test went off. He let it continue to ring as he bolted to the bathroom to see what the results on the sticks were. He picked them up and flipped them over from where Alex had left them on the counter after his last attempt to try and sneak the results early. "Two lines, two lines," he muttered to himself as he grabbed the package that the tests had come in to be able to tell what the results meant.
Alex peaked over his shoulder, running his finger down the instructions on the box until they were both able to find the information they wanted. "Two lines equals pregnant," the alpha mumbled to himself.
George felt his face light up with excitement as he let the tests tumble to the ground. He threw his arms around his partner and nearly launched forward in his efforts to kiss all over his face. The alpha responded by picking him up and spinning them around in a circle. "You're pregnant!" he laughed, leaning in and giving him a firm kiss on the lips. "We're gonna be parents!"
"I'm pregnant!" the omega crowed back in return, elated and releasing enough happy scent to fill up the entire house with the smell of cloves.
The entire pack had been happy to hear the news that George was pregnant. They had already known that the couple was going to try since packs almost never survived a sudden change in dynamic like a baby being born without the others knowing or a surprise mating, but they were excited to hear that it was happening so soon.
Izzie had immediately launched into trying to take care of her best friend and fellow omega. She cooked with him and made sure that she didn't have any spices or seasonings in the house that made him feel sick despite the omega so far being blissfully untouched by morning sickness.
Addison was responsible as always, and got him and Alex into an appointment where they could check the health of the tiny fetus and run some bloodwork to make sure that his hormone levels were balancing properly. She also got him started on prenatal vitamins. One thing that she had teamed up with Izzie on was removing all of the alcohol from the house entirely. That had caused quite the issue with Meredith and Derek, though they both seemed to be quickly placated.
Cristina seemed ambivalent about the baby in general, but she did get fiercely competitive when the conversation about who was going to be the infant's favorite once he was born.
Meredith was excited for the baby, and that the nursery would finally be getting some use. She and Derek had put it into the pack house under the assumption that eventually they would have kids, but nearly a year went along without any interest in having kids despite the majority of their pack having mates now.
Derek seemed to be a little jealous that despite being the oldest omega in the pack that he wasn't going to be the first to give the pack a pup, but was supportive of the other omega regardless. He would often make jokes about finding a way to get pregnant and deliver a healthy pup a few months before George was able to.
Mark gave a quick congratulations to George before he decided that he was going to make Alex's life a living hell with teasing. Before Meredith and Addison got on his case about it the jokes were focused on his master sex capabilities to be able to get the omega pregnant so early into their trying to conceive. It changed a little bit after that, but there were still a fair amount of innuendos and suggestive comments.
They hadn't told the chief yet since they were both a little nervous to do so. He had been kind to Bailey during her pregnancy, but she was Bailey and they were interns so they weren't too sure they would get the same treatment. Addison had advised them not to tell everyone about the pregnancy quite yet, without ever saying the word they were all trying to avoid.
Currently, they were all trying to get their work done. George had just finished scrubbing in on a surgery and was relaxing as best he could by leaning against the wall near the nurse's station while he finished his charting. He turned slightly to the side as he heard the tell-tale babbling of a baby and the scent of sweets from a baby mixed with Bailey's anise scent. "Hey Tuck!" he smiled as he turned to see the pup in her arms.
"Would you mind watching him for a moment? I have to go talk with the chief," Bailey said as she offered the pup out to his namesake.
"Of course I can do that!" he beamed as he placed his chart down on the counter of the nurse's station and then took the pup into his arms. "I need the practice anyway, don't I? Yes I do, yes I do," he babbled to the little one in his arms.
Tuck shrieked and giggled, reaching up at the omega's fingers with his own tiny hands. The resident took a step forward and then turned around with a finger pointed towards him, "What did you say?"
"Oh," George flushed darkly when he realized what he had said. "Y'know, just in general. At some point."
"George O'Malley, do not lie to me," she threatened as she advanced on him, though it was clear that he wasn't actually in danger.
"Alright, alright, fine," he mumbled as he shifted the babbling baby around in his arms. "I'm a couple weeks pregnant. Alex and I found out last Friday," he couldn't stop the smile that spread across his face.
"Congratulations! The first pup in the pack is always a big one, I hear," she chuckled. "And you will need practice. Do you want to babysit him for real?"
The omega chuckled. "Maybe in a couple months when we pass the intern exams. I don't want to have a baby in the house when the majority of the pack is going to be studying," he explained with a half-shrug.
"Alright, alright," Bailey waved her hand at him as she left to go and finish the business that she had come to the hospital to do.
The pain woke him up first.
He groaned and shut his eyes to try and go back to sleep. His mind was so addled with exhaustion from the shift that he had just pulled that he assumed he was having period cramps. He didn't want to get up and get pain killers for it, so curled up on himself and turned towards the warmth of his alpha.
It took several more moments of the searing pain for him to realize that something was horrifically wrong.
George sat up in the bed and then let a gutted shout leave him. He reached over and hit his alpha with his hand to try and get him to wake up. "Alpha! Alex! Please!" Tears were running down his face and the pain was echoing up through his legs and around his back.
The alpha turned around on the bed and then got him. "Baby, baby, what's wrong?" he asked, his voice small and groggy from sleep. He blinked a few times before the acidic smell of omegan panic hit his nose and he sat bolt up in the bed. "Babe, are you okay?"
"Something's wrong, something's wrong," he wrapped his arms around his stomach and doubled over as the pain increased more. The alpha reached over and grabbed the blanket to move it off of him so that he could carry his mate to the hospital or the bathroom depending on where they needed to go. He let out a small gasp as he saw blood pooling in between his legs and all over the sheets.
"NO! No, no, nononononono," George's legs kicked at the rest of the blankets and the sheet like he could get away from the blood and the pain through doing so. "Alpha, please make it stop," he sobbed.
Alex got off of the bed, looking around the room to try and find something that could stop what was happening. "I-I have to go get Addison. She'll know what to do. She'll be able to stop this," he said. The color was draining from his face the more that he smelled his omega in so much distress. The sweet milk undertone of the cloves and chocolate pudding had turned sour. There was so much blood.
The alpha opened the door to their room and then darted out into the house. He walked up to the master bedroom up on the third floor and banged on the door. "Addison! We need you! Something is wrong with George!"
He heard something happening on the other side of the door and then turned on his heel so that he could go back to his mate, assuming that they had heard him. He got onto the bed and gathered George up in his arms. "It'll be okay, baby, everything will be okay."
"It won't," he broke officially then. The air in his lungs was stolen by his sobs and his shoulders began to shake. He wiped at his face as he tried to stop crying but it only made it worse. It didn't take long before his arms were back around his waist.
Alex moved the omega around a little so that George's face was tucked into his neck right next to his scent gland and his arms were protectively around his mate. "It'll be okay, we'll be okay," he whispered.
"Alex," George's voice broke.
The door opened as Addison was finally able to get over to them. She had her pink bathrobe wrapped around her as she walked over to him. "Oh, George," she whispered as she got down on her knees in front of him. "There's nothing that I can do."
"I'm losing him, aren't I?" he asked, exhausted and depressed as he realized that this was real and happening to him. "I don't want to lose my baby…"
"Omega, I'm so sorry," Alex whispered as he pressed his nose into his lover's hair. He felt his own tears cascading down his face but he knew that he had to be there for his mate. He could feel his own feelings when he was sure that his mate wasn't going to feral and that he was feeling stable. "I'm so sorry that this happened."
