Chapter Text
"Here you go, Ted." Kon placed the frappuccino, and muffin on the counter. "The muffin's on the house, by the way. As for the frappuccino, Jay and I are curious, so we have to ask. Did you finally decide to try god's greatest gift to mankind?"
Their regular, a guy named Ted who obviously wasn't Ted Kord of Kord Industries, nah man, no way, shook his head. "You know I'm not really a fan of frappuccino, Kon. This is for a friend."
Since The Farmery (and contrary to what some people might believe, Jon, bless his heart, was the one who came up with the name) was a five-minute walking distance from the busier part of Metropolis' business district, Ted often dropped by to pick up a drink.
"Tell your friend I like him," Jay chimed in, earning a laugh from Ted.
Kon glanced to the side to see his fellow barista already done with the latté art. From this angle, it looked more of a snowflake than an actual spiderweb, but everyone had pretty much decided Jay's latté art always sucked, so he let it slide. Besides, they haven't recieved any complaints. Yet.
"Sure, I'll tell him. He'll probably get a kick out of it." Ted had grabbed his drink, along with the muffin, and gave a somewhat disarming smile that would've swept Kon off his feet were he into sweet, older multi-millionaires who might or might not be dabbling into heroics in their spare time. "Thanks for the free food, you guys."
Kon grinned back at him. "No problem, man." He watched Ted's smile widen as he left, frappuccino and muffin in hand. Another customer took his place.
The next hours saw Kon serving drinks, pastries, and sandwiches to dead-inside Met U students who only wanted coffee, hot Met U students who tried to flirt with him and Jay and asked for their number, business men and women in suits that definitely cost more than the coffee shop earned in a year, moms whose screaming babies almost ruptured his eardrums, and a whole lot of other people.
When the cuckoo clock struck five, the door slid opened, revealing Kon's favorite customer in the world. Worlds. Universe. Whatever.
Tim strode towards the counter, phone pressed to his ear. Kon shut down the sudden urge to eavesdrop. He wasn't supposed to use his powers in public unless he absolutely had to. It was a rule Clark had implemented. Which was understandable, really, since someone (read: Lex's psycho dad) had managed to steal his DNA, and make Kon, and Jon.
Once Tim reached the counter, he bid good-bye to the person he was calling. He straightened up to give Kon a quick once-over, the corners of his mouth lifting into a slow smirk. "I'll have an iced latté, and three double chocolate chip cookies."
Kon leaned forward, taking in the way his boyfriend looked in a dress shirt and blazer, smirk on his face, his eyes bright blue and gorgeous despite the dark bags underneath them. "That all? Sure you don't want a free kiss?"
"Hmm." Before they started dating, Kon always thought Tim looked pretty cute whenever he scrunched his brows. Now? Yeah, he still looked pretty cute. "I mean, I'm not going to say no to a free kiss—"
"Can you two take your flirting somewhere else?"
Kon barely managed to stop his fingers from digging into the counter and accidentally denting it. He shot Jay a dirty look, muttering an irritated, "Way to ruin the mood, dude," under his breath, then slipped his attention back to his boyfriend to quip, "Don't mind him. He's just sulking."
"You would too if the guy you're crushing on turned you down in front of your ex," was Jay's grumbled reply.
Kon rolled his eyes. He told Jay that chasing after the Econ major was a bad idea. Not only was the guy a Grade A player, something Kon knew for a fact because said Econ major hung out at the coffee shop with a new girl/guy on his arm every Friday, but he was also rude to the other baristas, and didn't tip. Ever. Major red flag, if you asked him.
Tim's sheepish expression turned thoughtful. "You know, I have a friend—"
Kon squinted suspiciously at him. "If it's Ives, I swear—"
"It's not," Tim interrupted in a reassuring voice, except it really didn't do a lot to reassure Kon because if his boyfriend wasn't talking about Ives, then it could only mean...
His eyes widened. "No."
"Yes." The lofty smirk that looked way too good on his boyfriend's face appeared again.
"No." Kon made an aborted move to cross his arms over his chest and channel his inner Superman-Clark mode, but ended up placing his hands on his hips and channeled dad-Clark instead. "Be serious, him and Jay would kill each other. Or take over the world."
"Not when they're too busy making out," Tim responded, smirk widening, and ew, he so did not need that image in his head, thank you very much. "Besides, if things go to shit, I could always ask Bruce to get the JLA to stop them."
If Kon wasn't half-alien with a megalomanic sociopath for a(nother) dad, he would've had a hell of a time believing his boyfriend's family funded the Justice League.
"Who are we talking about?"
Jay popped up at his side, holding what Kon belatedly recognized as Tim's iced latté, and a plate of cookies, which he handed over the counter.
"Bernard." His boyfriend accepted the orders with a grateful nod. "He's a friend. Likes girls and guys. Currently available."
"Really?" Jay didn't seem to look all that interested, but he didn't fool Kon for a second.
"Hold on, I have a picture somewhere." Tim set down the cookies to fiddle with his phone. "Here." He handed the phone to Jay.
Kon sneaked a peek at the screen, instantly recognizing the photo as the latest Bernard had posted on Instaslam, the one of him and Ariana Dzerchenko, Tim's ex-turned-close-friend. Okay, technically speaking, Bernard was also part of the line-up of Tim's exes-turned-close-friends, and it was actually a pretty impressive line-up, all things considered.
There was Zoanne, who had only visited The Farmery twice but both times told Kon she loved his piercings. There was Stephanie "call me Steph", who Jon took an instant liking to when he met her. There was Tam, who had made the move with Tim to Metropolis to continue working as his personal secretary. Then Bernard, obviously.
Unlike Tim's other friends, Kon hadn't met Ariana yet, but he had stalked her Instaslam. She was kind of chill, if her posts were anything to go by. In the photo, Bernard had an arm around Ariana's shoulders, sunglasses dangling from his nose as he winked at the camera.
"...He looks like an ass," Jay finally admitted, earning a snort from Kon. He had a sneaking suspicion Jay was going to say that.
"It's the sunglasses, isn't it?"
Jay gave a flippant nod. "Yeah."
"Don't worry." Tim shook his head, stray strands of hair falling in front of his eyes. Kon's hands itched to reach up, and tuck them behind his ear. "Those stupid sunglasses might make him look like a jackass, but he's not that bad once you get to know him."
Jay pressed his lips into a thin line, like he was actually thinking about considering Tim's offer. Kon inwardly crossed his fingers. He really, really, really hoped Jay would agree because in all seriousness, Jay could definitely use a distraction from his asshole crush.
A beat passed. Two. Kon crossed his fingers tighter.
Then, "Good enough for me. He has an Instaslam account?"
Kon mentally high-fived himself. "Yeah, it's b_downed_04." He caught his boyfriend's eye, feeling his lips quirk into a pleased grin as Tim gave a thumbs-up like, mission accomplished.
"Done." A soft rustle indicated Jay had slid his phone back inside his pocket.
"Excuse me."
The loud clear of a throat made Kon tear his gaze away from Tim, landing on a middle-aged lady behind him, arms crossed over her chest and an impatient look on her face.
"Oh, crap." Kon cleared his throat. "Uh, that'll be $13.50. Sir."
Tim looked like he was trying hard not to laugh as he dug into the pocket of his pants for the money. Kon received the $20 bill, and handed Tim the change.
"Thanks," his boyfriend managed to say, making Kon struggle to also stifle his laughter when the middle-aged lady cleared her throat impatiently for the second time.
"I'll have an almond milk frappuccino," the lady began after Tim left, taking his drink, and cookies with him, "a slice of lemon meringue pie, an apple turnover—"
Tim had sat down at the table near the cuckoo clock, obviously because that table had a good view of the counter. Every now and then, he would glance up from his laptop, and catch Kon's eye.
The minutes crawled ever-so-freaking slowly, making Kon wish he had time-control powers instead of super strength. Or super speed. Or x-ray vision. He shot the clock an impatient glance. Still had half an hour until they closed up.
"I'll cover for you." Kon turned to see Jay jerk his head at Tim's direction. "Go spend time with your boyfriend."
He knew that 'I'll cover for you' meant Jay was also volunteering for close up duty, and he seriously couldn't have asked for a better co-worker. "Thanks, dude."
It took all of Kon's self-restraint not to use his super-speed to rush to the back room, but he managed it fine. Moments later, he emerged from the back, and made his way to Tim, who already had his messenger bag slung over his shoulder.
"Hey, babe." Kon winked as he held out a hand to his boyfriend. "Shall we?"
