Work Text:
What is a bookmarklet
A bookmarklet is a bookmark (yes, one of those in your browser) that contains javascript code instead of a page address, and as such it will run limited javascript on any page you are in. All you have to do to run a bookmarklet is open your bookmarks and click on it.
They are Great. If you’ve never encountered reisling's INCREDIBLE bookmarklet that let you apply your preferred filters to ao3 search with just one tap to ANY tag in the archive you are missing out.
What can it do
This bookmarklet in particular is very simple, you open a fic with Y/N, you open your bookmarks and click on the bookmarklet and then a popup will appear, you insert the word or phrase you want to appear and then click ok. And it will change every instance of that word in the fanfic page.
Limits:
- It works only on ao3 and only in the work text, title and notes (no tags, no comments)
- It works only on the current page, the changes won’t be carried in the next chapter unless you are on Entire Work view.
- it won’t save your preferences (as I said, very limited script) and if you refresh the page the text will go back to how it was
- It works ONLY with variations of Y/N (so y/n, Y/n...), (Y/N) and [Y/N] not other kind of codes, yn won't be changed
Installation Guide
First of, try this way: Instructions because it's literally the easiest way to do it (you have to drag and drop an icon in your bookmarks. I needed to put it not on ao3 because I can't insert javascript in works here).
If it doesn't work please continue with the manual installation:
Manual Installation
The Code
The manual installation of bookmarklets is very simple and very difficult at the same time, mostly because every browser is different at this.
At its core the installation is 2 steps:
- Create a new bookmark
- Paste the code where the URL should go
- (and then save, ok, yeah, 3 steps)
Problem is that browser sometimes do not let you create a new bookmark from scratch, only save a present page you are in as a bookmark.
In that case you can do this:
- Save a very random page as a new bookmark (google.com? Ao3.org? This work in particular? Any, really)
- Then go where your bookmarks usually are and edit the bookmark. (This is also where different browsers differs)
- now delete the url you saved and copy/paste the code instead.
- You can also change the name
For a better explanation on where you should look in your browser Reisling has written an incredibly exhaustive guide as a part of her bookmarklet
