You nervously wrung your hands and looked over to Max, "I'm nervous." You stated biting at your lip. Max stared at you and rose an eyebrow, but softened once she had noticed how scared you actually were. She smoothed down a piece of tape, that was holding the skateboard together, and walked over to you. You gulped, not only were you terrified to step onto the piece of wood, but it was broken too.
"Hey, hey, you'll be okay." She smiled, "It's perfectly safe," but her smile fell when her eyes landed on the taped-up board. "Mhmm, yup, perfectly safe." She declared, her voice wavering ever so slightly. Your eyebrows furrowed at her, you were going to die today. Not because of any of the monsters that now roamed Earth, but because of a mere plank of wood on wheels.
"Okay..." You reluctantly shuffled over to your doom and carefully placed a foot onto the board before using a little momentum to try and push your other foot onto it; however, the board began to slip from underneath you. Firm hands gripped onto you to keep you from falling. Soft, blue eyes stared into your wide ones. You could feel the adrenaline pumping throughout your body.
"I got you." It was short and sweet and simple, but it was all you needed. "Maybe we should start by doing something different." Max directed you to only put one foot onto the board and the other securely on the ground. You could feel the board wobble underneath you; you were a lot more nervous than you had thought. You felt Max rub comfortingly at your back as she instructed you to push with your other foot. Your movements were jagged, but you successfully rolled across the empty road, as Max struggled to keep back her giggles from watching you stiffly push the board.
Your lips upturned into a grin, thrilled with your minor achievement, and you looked behind you to revel in your success to see a very proud Max already smiling at you. "I did it!" You let out ecstatically while Max ran over to you.
"You did!" She congratulated as she brought you into a warm hug. "I'm so proud of you, well done." Your smile grew giddy at her praise. "Wanna start just standing on the board?" She suggested. After being able to get from one side if the road to the other, you were feeling a lot more confident.
"Of course. I'm a pro now, nothing can stop me!" You grinned, holding your head up high.
"Yeah, right" Max laughed as she playfully rolled her eyes. You placed your hand over your heart and gasped with feigned hurt.
"You'll see, Mayfield. I'll prove you wrong." You huffed, your competitiveness taking over. You confidently placed one foot on the board and then the other. Your arms were outstretched as you strategically balanced yourself on the wobbling board. The board shifted from side to side and you feared you were going to fall; however, you suddenly had somehow steadied and you were comfortably on the board. Your arms slapped against your sides as you put them down and smirk at Max.
"See? A proffesion- BEEEEP! " Your victory was short-lived once you felt Max's board slip from underneath you. In a panic, you grab onto Max's hands and pull her down with you. You hit the ground with a groan and your girlfriend's knee slams into the concrete between your legs and you can hear a hiss escape her lips. The two of you look up to see a very familiar '79 Camaro and a leering Billy with his hand on the wheel. He's got an ugly, devilish smirk plastered onto his face as he stared at the both of you.
Max scoffed in annoyance and flipped him off with a clench of her jaw and a fiery look in her eyes. She grabbed your hand and the slowly rolling skateboard before storming into your house. She pulled you up the stairs and let the board fall once she was in your room. "I can't believe him! Why can't he just leave us alone? God, he's so irritating!" She grumbled as she flops onto your bed. That's when you notice her knees.
"Oh, Max... you're bleeding." You frowned. You quickly fumbled around the house to look for plasters (band aids), a clean cloth and a bowl of warm water. When you get back, Max is patiently sitting on the bed, waiting for you. You sit down next to her after placing the needed items on the bedside table. Small stones are stuck to her skin and, carefully, you brush them off. You ring out the cloth of water and delicately dab her knees, ridding them of blood, before securing plasters over her wounds.
You let out an exhausted sigh and allowed your eyes close for a few seconds; Max shifted next to you and wrapped her arms around you. "Tired?" She whispered and you responded with a hum and a nod of the head. You felt a tug on your arm and you fell back onto the pillows of your bed. "I'm tired too." Her head rested on your shoulder and the last thing you felt was a soft kiss on your cheek before drifting off to sleep.
