Work Text:

Katsuki’s eyes fluttered open. Slowly he sat up, eyes squinting to the bright sunny light.  He was sitting under a big tree that masked the soft green grass from the bright glowing sun.

The sun poured through the sky down onto the warm dirt. Down the hill he was perched on were fields of sunflowers. Standing in miss sharpen rows and patterns. Growing together or apart.

“Kacchan, you're awake!” A familiar bright and cheery voice called from behind him.

The small boy turned to the green head behind him. His eyes shined like stars took their time to fall from the sky just to glow in his eyes.

His hair curled like waves of sweet and love. Uncaring to the world around them. Ungiving to the scrapes or bruises that come with the concept of hate.

The sight of his friend brought waves over his soul. Release to see the glow in the smile. That toothy, giving smile.

Katsuki rushed forward, grabbing the small boy by his arm and pulling him into a tight hug. Like a hug will shave away sorrow.

“Silly kacchan! What are you doing here?”

“I’m here for you, stupid! Why else would I be here?”

The branches and folding leaves above them rustled like faint growling.

Katsuki gave off a proud, toothy gin.

The green head boy giggled, clasping Katsukis face with his soft, tiny hands.

“Silly, silly Kacchan. You need to head home! Auntie and mommy will miss you!” The small boy said brightly.

Katsuki exhaled. Like a simple breath would wipe away sins, or the fear of loss. Staring at the small boy infront of him, Katsuki could swear within the light of the sun, he could see the light outline of a halo above his head.

Now, Katsuki doesn't believe in a god. Or the after life. Well, he did. But with the sight of this pure boy, he swore he saw an angle.

A being that could only come from a place like heaven. Like such a beauty couldn't be born on a place like earth.

Like the mortal plane couldn’t comprehend the beauty in the silent wings from an angle.

Silent wings that watch over the world and cradle the tears of sorrow.

“There fine Izu! C'mon let’s go play! Like we always used to! This time you can be the hero! I’ll be your loyal sidekick!” The blondy took the others hand.

They raced down the hill into the sunflowers. Running from the wind, and the dust it carries with it.

“B-but Kacchan!” Cried out the greenet.

“You can be All Might! I’ll be Sir Night Eye!” Called out the blondy, hand gripping the others tightly.

“Kacchan-“

“We can play as long as you like!”

“Kacchan!”

“We’ll stay together, forever”

“Kacchan!!!!”

“We’ll be the best hero duo ever-“

KACCHAN!”

Izuku ripped his tiny hand away, pulling it to his chest. The other skidded to a stop, turning to look at his childhood friend in confusion.

The sun and wind whipped through the air and sky. Silent howls of pain and silent cry’s of pain.

“Izu-?”

“You need to go home.” The small boy spoke quietly, looking at the floor.

“B-but-“

“Kacchan.” The boy looked up at him. Eyes that contained a longing he would never understand. Like they held a desperate wish he knew wouldn’t come true. Or a wish he couldn’t let be true.

“They will miss you. And you have to be a hero!”

“But, I can’t leave you alone! We’re suppose to be a hero duo! Together forever! Remember?”Cried out the blondy.

“Kacchan. You need to be a hero. My hero. Ok?” His voice was soft. Sympathy and love that felt like years in the growing.

“You’ll be the best hero ever. But to do that, you need to go home.” He cupped Katsukis small cheeks with his tiny hands. He gently wiped away a tear with such softness. Such care.

“I can’t leave you-“ Katsukis breath hitched,

“My sweet, silly Kacchan. I can’t go back with you.... but... I’m always with you. But you need to go back now. They need you.” The small boy leaned forward, placing a general kiss on his forehead.

A kiss that felt like me would ward off all that would hurt. A kiss that would forever live. One you could never wipe away.

“Promise me Kacchan. Promise me you’ll be a hero. Promise me you’ll be my hero.”

Katsuki nodded.

Gently, the greenet released his cheeks.

Tears welled in Katsukis eyes, he twisted around and took off. Wind whistling in his ear the promises he’s made. The moments he could never forget.

Like a choir, they all sang in his mind. Pricing together like a shatter mirror. Or a shattered memory.

He ran. And ran. Not looking back at the waving boy. Or at the tears that ran down his cheeks like streams in the willows.

White noice filled his ears as he ran. Colors around him fading to a warm white.

So calm.

So sweet.

If only Izuku could have....
