List of House, M.D. Rec Lists: 2005 to present (the Rec List List!)

Summary:

(This AO3 work is NOT rec list. It's a guide to help you find works on and off of AO3, especially those from earlier in House fandom.)

This is a collection of all the House, M.D. fanfic & fanwork rec lists I have found. It's inclusive of any and all pairings, genres, tropes, and so on. Some of the rec lists here are thematically organized, or include descriptions or reviews of each work, which may help you find something that piques your interest, so I've noted that below.

Also included below is a list of fan community sites where you can dive into a House time capsule to find old favorites, new-to-you stories, and post fic-finding queries.

This project began with asking a fic-finder community for help finding more recent rec lists, and has expanded ever since. Some visitors were inspired to publish their own rec lists (and you can, too!).

It's never too late to let authors and creators know you read/view their work! I've included some resources to help you do that.

(January 2021: Number of rec lists has been GREATLY expanded, and I've added more in the resource sections. This project has come a long way since 2013!)

Work Text:

List of House, M.D. Fanfic & Fanwork Rec Lists (2005-present)

Welcome to the the "Rec List List!"

This is a collection of all the House, M.D. lists I have ever found, inclusive of any and all pairings, genres, tropes, crossovers, and so on. Rec lists featuring fanfic and/or other types of fanworks (vids, art, podfic, etc.) are welcome. Some rec lists are thematically organized, or include descriptions or reviews of each work that may help you find something that piques your interest, so I've noted that in each entry below.

Also included below are some resources to help you find House fic and fanworks, and how to contact and leave comments for author and creators.

Something Missing?

Yes, YOU!

Several visitors to the Rec List List have been inspired to publish their own rec lists. YES, MAKE MORE REC LISTS and describe why those fics and fanworks moved you or glued themselves to your brain! Here's a guide to making a themed rec list. (And please give me the link to your list so I can add it here!) It’s never too late to help fans find recommended works. Your fandom needs you :).

This is a living document, and I update it periodically. It began as a 2013 query on a fic-finding community asking more recent rec lists. Please leave a comment if you know of any rec lists I have missed. I want every corner of House fandom to be represented here. Sometimes on a fic-finding or shipping site, when readers ask for noteworthy examples of specific tropes or topics, several people recommend their favorites, and it turns into a crowd-sourced rec list. Please let me know of any other posts like this, too.

Please also let me know if any links on this page are broken, so I can update them.

Important Instructions for Accessing Recs and House Fandom

  • Always read the comments. This fandom was very collaborative on Livejournal and Dreamwidth, and it's very common for readers to post additional recs or reviews in the comments section. If you don't click on the comments, you're missing out on half of this fandom.
  • Always leave a comment (even a tiny one) when you read a fic, watch a fanvid, view fanart, etc.. It's never too late to tell authors and creators that you've seen their work. Plus, your contribution to the conversation becomes part of House fandom history for future fans to enjoy. Make this a personal goal in your fannish pursuits.
  • Always look at the bottom of each page to see if you've only seen the first of many pages. I've noted below where you should look for links to the next page, and what that link is called.
  • Scroll down before you click away. A lot of journals used to have header images, which are now either a mess or blank. It make look like the page is broken, but scroll down and it's likely that all the content is still there.
  • Broken links can be unbroken. If a link within a rec list doesn't work, see my Tips for Handling Broken Links to Fics & Other Fanworks.

Where to Look for House Fic and Fanworks

Here are some sites where you can dive into a House time capsule to find old favorites, new-to-you stories, meet new fandom friends, or post fic-finding queries.

  • House/Wilson Requests and Recs - Although it was established by House/Wilson fans, lots of fics discussed there are H/W friendship, any and all other pairings, or gen/no pairing. Amazing tagging system makes it easy to browse and is well tended by the mods. People post looking for specific fics or themes, and knowledgeable fans reply and discuss them.
  • House MD Fic Finder - Another place where people ask for fics or topics they're looking to read. No tagging system, so you can either scroll through to see what catches your interest, or use a search engine like google to search for specific words or phrases (titles, authors, character names, etc.). Type this in the search bar, with this exact spelling, spacing, punctuation, and word order:
    "word or phrase" site:hmd-finders.livejournal.com
  • House MD entry on Fanlore - An article about the show and its fandom. Includes a partial list of House Livejournal communities, some of which later migrated to Dreamwidth.
  • House Fan Fiction Archive on Squidge - This especially has a lot of older works. You can search by author, title, and other parameters.
  • All House fics posted on Fanfiction.net This is the link that includes all ratings, sorted by update date. By default, FF.net only shows ratings K-T (up to teen) when you do searches, so look at the filter options if you want to include the rated-M (mature) stuff.
  • House Podfics on Jinjurly.com - You can browse by fandom, relationship, podfic reader, author, ets. Two warnings about this site: 1) the search function is buggy so you just need to click on one of the "browse by" links and then look on that list for what you're looking for. 2) It is not a secure site (doesn't work with https), so you may not want to actually download files from here. There are other sites that host podfic. AO3 has some. But this can tell you whether podfics exist, and who recorded them.
  • All House works posted on AO3 - Sorted by date updated. House fandom didn't have the same tagging culture that post-Tumblr fandoms use, but you can still make use of the search features of AO3 to find some good stuff.

How to Contact Creators & Leave Comments

Many House fic readers and writers these days are thrilled to talk about House fandom, when opportunity arises. And it’s never too late to let authors, vidders, and artists know you’re exploring their work, no matter when it was originally published.

I encourage you to read and comment on the platforms where the work was first posted (often Livejournal or Dreamwidth in this fandom), so you can take advantage of reading and adding to the community discussions about those works.

You can also contact authors or leave comments on any platform where you spot them. For a sampling of platforms where fannish things happen these days, see copperbadge’s Tumblr "Find Me" Directory.

Here are some tips on leaving feedback, small or large, for authors:

Technical Difficulties: "Broken" links and legibility

If you encounter broken links within the rec lists, see my Tips for Handling Broken Links to Fics and Fanworks. Sometimes a link is not really broken, and sometimes content is available elsewhere if you know how and where to look.

This guide will also help you deal with legibility issues on the sites you reach. Older sites may have colors, fonts, or background images that you can easily whisk away so you can binge in peace. :)

Happy reading! Happy viewing! Happy commenting! Happy rec list making! YOU are what helps keep this fandom going. Let me know if there’s anything you feel I could add to this resource. Thanks!
