It started when he was three years old and brought a rabbit with a broken leg from their yard to his room, claiming that since it was hurt, it needed his bed more than he did. Scott was lying, boneless and content, across Kip’s lap when it happened.
Edmonton and Anaheim were fighting it out 2-2 in the third period and Scott watched with a sudden premonition of disaster as one of the Anaheim defensemen went down on the ice during a scrum. Bright red blood flashed across the white ice, a skate cut, and Scott lunged for the TV remote.
The screen went black, but the damage was done. “Oh my god,” Kip said, his face shocked and pale.
