Artemis was gone. And Jason knew, logically, she’d return. She’d told him as much, had brushed her fingers along his jaw and said it with that quiet finality she always carried: she would only be gone for the weekend, business on Themyscira, nothing more. His brain understood that. His brain repeated it like a mantra. But his chest didn’t care for logic, and his bones had never learned faith. There was always a quieter, meaner voice coiled like a snake in the back of his mind, always poised to strike. The voice that told him absences grew into abandonments, and promises were just soft lies meant to make the leaving easier.

He thought about Vergil. About the shadow his brother had left behind. That gaping, endless hole that no amount of demon-hunting or bourbon could fill. Nero was a piece of Vergil. Maybe the best piece. Something bright and sharp and unfinished. A second chance—not to fix Vergil, not to replace him, but maybe to learn from it. To be better. He could be there for Nero in ways he couldn’t for Vergil, to make sure that Nero never had to be alone the way Vergil evidently was.

Summary
Nero was just a kid. Brash, cocky, rough around the edges—but still a kid. Still sixteen, with too much weight on his too-small shoulders and eyes that had seen too much already. He had that same hollow look Dante once carried after Eva died. That wide-eyed stillness that said, I’m alone, and I don’t know how not to be.
It wasn’t just Vergil’s eyes that haunted him when he looked at Nero. It was himself.
