Summary
Having only recently gotten engaged to Nie Mingjue in an effort to keep him out of the abuse he received in the Jin Sect. Meng Yao cannot help but feel as if he doesn't deserve any of it. Meanwhile Nie Mingjue misinterprets Meng Yao's behaviour creating some small misunderstandings between the two.
In other words, a fluff piece that decided it wanted to give Nieyao a bit of angst as well.

“I’m sorry.” Are the first words out of his brother’s mouth after he joins him, and Guangyao looks up sharply, one eyebrow raised, “I didn’t help, when I saw.” Zixuan’s mouth twists unhappily, his nose wrinkling slightly in disgust, “I don’t think there’s anything I can do to stop him. He doesn’t listen to me, even if he treats me better.” He looks ashamed, like that shouldn’t be the case, despite their mothers’ much different stations in life.
Guangyao appreciates that he feels that way. But neither of them are stupid. They know the way this world works. He just nods, trying not to think about what, exactly, his brother saw.
Far too much, if the look in his eyes as he reaches across the table to lay a hand over Guangyao’s is any indication, “If you ever need my help… in the aftermath, I’m here. You shouldn’t have to deal with this alone. I can’t stop him, but I can help heal the bruises, or just listen, if you ever want to talk.”
When Jin Zixuan witnesses their father's abuse of Jin Guangyao, it pushes them closer together.

What he didn’t expect was to finding himself falling in love with the ice demon, or the pain that came with the knowledge that for him he will always be a coward who hide in the shadows and behind those stronger than him. He then felt wronged, tired, because all of what he had done was for nothing, it brought nothing good for him, only misery. He might be the best cultivator, second only to Luo Binghe, but at what cost, all of the people he knew were dead, the one he loved would never return his feelings, there was nothing left, not greatness or acknowledgment, only pain and an emptiness in his heart.
That’s why he did it, because he was mean, he was petty, and wanted for that person to really look at him one last time. He betrayed his king, he knew that he wouldn’t be able to harm him, but at least died with his eyes on him, that was more than he deserved.
