Summary
During the last year of her schooling, Shelby is assigned to live in the most dangerous place in the Unnamed Lands. Nothing will go wrong, she was told, but there are forces out of her control working against her as she attempts to do her work.
Through this work, though, she meets the citizens of a colony ravaged by disease, an archaeologist attempting to learn the secrets buried underneath the land, and a princess with more secrets than the trees that Shelby has found herself surrounded by. They teach her more than her schooling ever could.

And then it’s gone, and Marya is gone with it. No longer being held hostage by her crew, Ludmila collapses to the ground, breathless. It seems that along with the one who gave her guidance the bird has taken her breath. She gasps once, twice, trying to restart her biological functions before her heart follows the example of her lungs and flickers out.
Comfrey MacLeod arrives fifteen minutes too late. Ludmila has just gotten her bearings again, rushed to attempt to stop the ship from crashing into the ground below (it is not going well. She has lost so much crew) when the Zephyr pulls up alongside her and stops the descent. Comfrey takes Ludmila and the other survivors–she sees the boatswain, bleeding out on the deck–back to the Zephyr and lets the Kingfisher plummet.
OR
When Marya gets taken by the Straka, Ludmila turns her back from the skies in grief. She can't bear to see anyone else be lost at her hands. That philosophy is challenged when the granddaughter of Comfrey MacLeod convinces her to join her in the skies to save both her grandmother and Ludmila's mentor.

This is totally not what False wants to hear and totally not what she's been fishing for the whole time. "Who says I would ask you?" she bursts out, skeptical, but it's an obvious lie. And they both know it.
